For some reason I'm seeing black areas on my german gear where I havent even changed or editted anything--it's the default. Where I did edit it looks absolutely fine. Anyone know why this is happening? I used default german_gear.vtf file and changed image size to 2048 and started skinning, but I didnt change any of the equipment where I'm seeing the black. Here's a pic:

You may have shifted the whole skin since the black is appearing in more than one area.

That's what I thought aswell, thats why I made a whole new skin and the same thing happened. I've noticed the same black areas on the same spots on other custom skins by Wile and others too. Another area I noticed was on the back of the spade, there's a separation down the length of the handle and black in between.

I found out finally what the problem was. GCFScape extracts .vtf files poorly. The width of the files is shortened when it is extracted. I found that vtfedit didnt have this problem and now there is no black areas.

huh.
I use GCFScape for everything. Never had any problems. Interesting. Maybe if you have time you should drop a line to Nem.
What version of GCFScape and VTFEdit are you using? The latest versions of each both use HLLib to extract .gcf content (and thus should be identical). The HLLib code relating to .gcf extraction hasn't been changed in about a year (GCFScape v1.2.8 and newer contains the newest .gcf code, all versions of VTFEdit should).
Nem
P.S. If anyone has a .gcf file that GCFScape or VTFLib or Crafty or BSP Viewer (or any of my programs) consistently mess up, I'd appreciate it if they send it to me. The algorithm for defragmenting the files is a guess on my part, it seems to be time tested but you never know.

i was having this same kindof problem too. when saving as a tga from Vtf explorer, it was taking a thin strip from the right side of the vtfs and putting them on the left side, and the whole skin was off by a little bit, resulting in black lines in various places. So, I have to cut out the strip from the left side, move the whole thing over a bit to the left, then paste the strip on the right side, where it should be. I have to do this every time i skin somthing.
