Displacement roofs - how?

Yup , tabu.jack raised this as something I should do to my testmap, but in spite of searching all the usual places I've not had any luck finding a tut on how to actually do it.

And I've experimented in Hammer, but just don't know what I should be doing.

Can someone either post a how-to, or point me at a decent tut?

ta!

What do you mean displacement roofs? Make a roof brush, and displace it, just like anything else. What's so hard about that?

... and so I end up with a slightly wobbly flat plane 1 pixel thick...

I'd like to know how to make roofs like the official maps, with nice edges, and that block light properly when inside the buildings. Which probably means creative use of sewing, occluders and god knows what else.

So in conclusion - I'd like an answer rather than a smart-arse comment. What's so hard about that? ;)

Select the brush with the 'main' tool. Don't use the texture 'Lift + Select' and just create the displacement right away.

This is because creating a displacement makes every brush face selected a displacement.

Also when painting geometry you probably want the 'size' of the 'brush'(that you are using the 'paint' the geometry) to be at least the thickness of the world brush.

Hope that makes sense.

load up sdk_dod_flash.vmf and look how they did it, basically make a normal roof /w clipping tool (image) (http://img382.imageshack.us/img382/9894/p18hi.jpg) and put two more brushes overtop if it, angle them over it so it fits right (image) (http://img50.imageshack.us/img50/5485/p27fr.jpg) now make those 2 brushes you put over the roof displacements and starting painting the geometry from there :) (image) (http://img50.imageshack.us/img50/6109/p35hv.jpg)

Sorry I could have made it better but it was about a 5 minute thing :(
You can do more advanced ones, but that's just a basic to help understand.

Thanks guys, I should be able to get something going from your replies

I'd forgotten about the Flash vmf, I'll take a look at that too, but I can certainly improve on a plain world brush roof now :)
