Is there a way to give a custom texture a certain material type without editing the materials.txt ?
I tried naming them the same as exsisting textures but that caused DoD to crash.
Or is there a way to make a map specific materials file, so every map has its own causing no confliction ?

you cant have a map seperate materials.txt file
and i dont know why it crashes dod, it shouldnt.
are you including your wads with -nowadtextures or -wadinclude ??
also, using the search function you will find a thread like this already exists :P

I'm using -nowadtextures, plus I did a search using "materials textures", but it didn't show anything useful.
The best thing to do is look in the existing materials.txt file for a texture name that is of the required material type, BUT which you do not have loaded in any Wad files you are using - you don't want conflicting texture names. Then just rename your texture to match that. It works fine for me.

That must of been the problem, I had the dod_donner wad listed, and my custom wad listed, however they both had a texture with the same name.
