Open letter to all.....

I'm not a moderator so what I say amounts to a hill of beans. I'm saying it anyway. This of course does not apply to everyone, but there are always a few in the crowd that just don't seem to get what these forums are for. Nobody's is perfect. We all will slip once in awhile. I cannot say I have never been guilty of anything stated below - but I do try to make a conscious effort to be civil to others and think before I post.

1) stop trying to turn this forum into a competition. No more pitting one skinner's or modeller's work against another's. If you must compare it to something, compare it to the defaults that come with the game. I can't speak for anyone else, but I personally don't want to see the phrase "wile's is better..." in another post ever again. Constructive criticism is one thing; pimping someone else's work in an artist's release or preview thread is another.

2) Don't go modding another person's custom work without asking them first. The default skins came with the game, and are accepted as being moddable. Unless the author of a skin has given open permission to use their work (as I have), ASK FIRST. Otherwise, keep it to yourself. If the author says no (which has happened to me) you respect their wish.

3) If the author asks you to give credit, just include a readme in the ZIP / RAR file and put the credit in there. What most authors, like myself, want is credit in the readme file because if you were not already aware skins files get mirrored all over the internet. (I have found my "Gefreiter Josuf" skins on at least 5 different download sites I never submitted it to). You never know where these files will end up, you have no control over it. Bottom line, put the credit in a readme file in your release. After spending 30+ hours working on a skin, just to have someone add a couple nicks and scratches and not bother to even mention your name will really piss a fella off.

4) It is good to be honest. It is also good to be considerate. Not all posts have to be about "how great" a work is. If you dislike some work posted in the forum, at least try to be specific, but even if you can't at least be courteous. And for those who didn't already know, saying "Dingleman's k98 skin is way better" is NOT being courteous.

5) If you are thinking about posting work, and can't stand constructive criticism, don't bother posting. If someone posts an abusive or rude respone to your post, report it to a moderator. They WILL deal with it. Don't start a pissing contest. If someone has given you a constructive critique of your work, reply in kind with an equal amount of respect and courtesy.

I agree that a little common courtesy would be nice to see, not just here but everywhere.

After reading your post I gotta admit I'm more than a little concerned about this forum. I'll be keeping a much closer eye on here from now on.

@ Wile. In regards to people using your work and not giving credits, if you see it happen or know who's doing it send me a PM and I'll deal with it.

Good post mate, and I hope people take heed.

It needs to be said that people abused eskwaad via pms.

Now honesly, wtf is that about? People do this out of their own spare time for our benefit, for free and some of you people have the arrogance to abuse others for it.

Now we all miss out on some great weapon skins because some particular person...

We should boycott the person in question's work. ALL of it. And not provide any feedback AT ALL. that'll put him in his place.

And what would that do? Probably nothing. Whoever forced eSkwaad over the edge has undoubtedly learned his lesson already; humiliating him more will do little but make these forums a less friendly place.

It's always heart-wrenching to see posts like this. They mean things got out of hand, as they far too often do, no matter what community you're in.

When I first came here, I made some mistakes, released some skins I shouldn't have, but I think I always gave credit. For those of us who've been around, it's just common sense.

But you also have to consider how the majority of people are raised today, what with P2P music downloading and other such practices; people don't feel responsible in general. Not for the music they listen to, the games they crack, the skins they rip.

Flipping out at the kids who haven't yet learned to respect the work of others only makes them laugh: "You're not my parents. Screw off," they tend to think. And it's true; we're not. Not that it's likely they'd listen to their parents either, in that circumstance.

I hear of happy, healthy relationships between parents and offspring much too rarely, so I'm making generalizations that I know aren't absolutely true. The happy ones are the quiet ones, so you don't hear from them as much. But they're there, I know they are. I may have been too much of a brat to be one for most of my life, but I try to be now.

Mass education doesn't work as well as individual attention, the same on-line as in the overbloated, underbudgeted public schools, but who among us has the time to take all these kids on? They're here to get away from their lives, to have something that makes them feel like they have some kind of control: Either they don't have it in real life, or they do and are too angsty to say so, prefering to act like a little crap with abusive, idiotic parents when they really have everything handed them on a platter.

When I first came here, I was amazed at who this community was composed of; so many older, wiser, kinder people. In my clan alone, we've got four or five veterans, one of whom was in Vietnam! I never expected that. I fell in love. I felt at home. It was comfortable. I could go onto servers and have people helping out the team, happy banter between both, compliments for great skills.

I could come to these forums and dive into a discussion, ask questions, get helpful answers.

That's what Day of Defeat has always been to me, despite the mod going retail and the influx of kiddies that had yet to be educated in any kind of etiquette.

Through it all, I've been happy with how there always seems to be such nice guys at the vanguard here. There's been ups and downs, but there's always someone to remind us. Day of Defeat was never just a game. It's always been the people who made it great; the dev team, the moderators, the modders, the gaggles of happy followers, the players, the people who remind us that this isn't just "the Internet" as so many prefer to see it; where nobody's anything but pixels on a screen that deserve no more regard than another crack in a road somewhere.

I'm hardly ever around, but I like to be reminded once in a while, even if I can't play with any of you.

I remember other modders who've been chased away by the calusness of human nature, embittered and hateful. As much as they've been hated for the things they've said in anger, in the moment, I've had to sympathize. It's who we are.

All we can do is try to step in before things get that bad and show some honest understanding and appreciation, even when things are being said out of rage. No matter how anyone else may be flipping out, be nice enough to give them the benefit of the doubt: Even the hardest of little punks can end up being an asset to the community if they're just shown a little kindness and understanding.

Each and every one of us--with a few exceptions--have been punks at some point or other. Not every one of us had the benefit of a helping hand.

I'm not saying to coddle anyone or let them carry on and on, ruining everyone's day. Gentle prodding can work better than a slap sometimes.

Sometimes, that's all the power a young punk needs; being offered the choice to be nice or to be cruel. It may take a few tries, but there probably is some basic good in most people.

I think that eskwaad isnt quiting. He says that but i doubt it i know hell come back. And if he does if someone takes his wrok without permision I say we track him down and beat him lol j/k We should just report it. Dont go on making this place a terrible mean place. I know ive taken peoples work before and that stoped after the second time when I didnt give someone credit and when I had no permision. After I read all the stuff you posted wile it made me think. Im not going to ever skin over peoples skins anymore (Enlese I have full permision and i give them credit). And we should have a thread thanking eskwaad for his wonderful skins and asking him to come back.

Ok. I can see this going downhill fast.

What has needed to be said has been said and now its getting personal. If you've got an issue with them take it up via Private Message or off-forum.
