smallhill is another popular map to make use of it.

Yeah, and I think its an example of why its bad.

That's a pretty enjoyable map, but whenever the random deaths occur, people mostly say "wtf" or "lame" or something similar. Fortunately, he's got it on a pretty long loop, so they don't happen that often.

but see, with mortars you get into the old gameplay vs. realism debate.
Personally, I like mortars, just not that often.

personally, i hate mortar effects that seem to be random. i would prefer to know where a mortar is going to land, but not when. then its a case of trying to run past the area before you hear the fatal "whoooooosh" noise and shout "aaah fu**......" into the mic :D

Nope, I gotta say I like the way they implemented them in smallhill.

You have warning - you can hear the planes and / artillery firing BEFORE, long before, the shells / bombs hit the ground. It's not like you ran into a hidden minefield without warning. This action FORCES people to react, get up and move from that nice cozy camping spot or die, OR it denies a passage for a few brief moments to the enemy and makes them run for cover. A lot of people who get upset getting killed by mortars or bombs also get upset at just plain old getting killed.

I especially like the way the 1.3 map dod_escape encourages you to take the objectives (nebelwerfers) - if you blow one up they can't fire as many rockets at you.

Interesting, had a beta test tonight of my map, with the 88. It has a wicked rate of fire (at this time).

When the Axis "discovered" it, they started blasting the hell out of the Allies. There was some frustration at first. But the func_tracktrain was in a very limited area...

And I was amazed how quickly players learned to avoid the area. There was the "hey, I think I'll chance it, they don't seem to be using it now" and a mad dash across the field of fire kind of thing.

(the rest of the test was a big frustrating-bottleneck-hellhole-of-a-map!! Back to the drawing board!! )

But the 88 was a thumbs up!!
