Overlays trouble

I'm having trouble with overlays.
I've created a huge displacement area with multiple blocks and I want to place an overlay track over it, except when I try, it appears that at the places where the blocks join, I've essentially got to place 2 overlays and assign one to the first block and one to the second.

This seems to make joining them up a bit difficult and if I want a corner or something it becomes a bit impossible to join up the various vertices of the overlay.
The other problem is that at random intervals the damn things disappear completely when I'm working on them.

(assuming you can make head nor tail of what I'm trying to describe...)
Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

I know just what you mean - overlays (and decals) were the next things I was going to add to my 'dumb questions' thread.

Overlays on displacements are a bit more complicated though - it's not really a dumb question at all.

I remember seeing a superb tutorial (or it might have been a forum thread) which showed how to make a road with really nicely done sharp turns in it. All done with displacements and overlays and blending, iirc. But I read that *before* I really tried to map, and now I can't find the little bleeder anywhere. If someone has a link to *that*, then I think your question would be answered.

have you gone into the properties of the overlay and selected which brushes its to cover? you can choose multiple sufaces by holding down ctrl and click on each brush/displacement when using the select suface option.

In the overlay properties, find the Brush faces field and click on pick.
Select multiple faces using Ctrl+left click and youre done.
You can stretch your overlay by clicking on the overlay button on the left bar again and drag and drop the white dots.

Im not sure if you can place them on angles.
Ill try...

This is the piece of info I was missing. Another reason I'm glad when someone asks a supposedly "stupid" question. ;)

Thanks for that.

That was exactly what I wanted to know - thankyou sly assassin and kominaaa.

I knew I could select one brush but didn't know I could do more than one. Life becomes so much easier now.

Thanks again!
