Map Development Time ?

I was just curious as to how long Valve and the community mappers spend on creating maps for source.
I average about 3 weeks per map myself. Any longer and chances are good it will never get released. I have a short attention span. :p

I read, to make quality maps like Valve does, it takes 3 months.

depends on the idea or inspiration ;)
my maps start quick, a couple of hours for the main layout, then 2 or 3 months to rebuild things that don't make sense, add details and optomise / test.

My answer is "however long it needs to take"
However if you want a specific amount of time, I'll say 3 months is a good amount for me right now, after having spent 14 making my first map. I think I can get dod_rive done in 3 months easily. it's been three weeks and it's about 25% done (whatever that means)

Usually, I'm used to spending ~1 week on a map. After that, there's a 95% chance I'll lose interest in it (which is why you see wolfescape and dani at 15% since mid-november). Only reason why I've been working on dod_bouddha for this long is because I now have a monetary motivation... as with woflescape and dani in the future.
But for me... yeah... If I don't start, make, and release the map within a week... there's a very low chance that anyone'll be able to play it.

Bierville took about 2 years from start to finish. Density probably about 18 months, 5 releases and probably about 12 different test versions.

I've spent almost a year on dod_fiammata, but then again I've gone from knowing NOTHING about mapping to somewhat of an expert at it, at least to the point that I can answer most questions thrown at me. Not to mention the map has completely changed in layout and look over that year.
Example:
Really Old: http://img160.imageshack.us/img160/7430/dodinferno00890ip.jpg
Old: http://img501.imageshack.us/img501/7947/dodinferno00032pd.jpg
New: http://img501.imageshack.us/img501/1889/dodfiammatab100016xy.jpg
Plus I haven't exactly been on a rigorous schedule. Usually I'll map for 3-4 days for a combined ~20+ hours then take a 7-10 day break. The I'll come back and tear an entire section apart, then redo it much better. As of lately though, it's been more like, work on the map for 4-5 hours for one day, then take a 2 week break.
