Trouble Re-Skinning

Whenever I try to stick a custom texture on models (textures I made), I get an error. Every time, even if it's the right size and in .bmp format.

Why?!

I'm trying to re-skin my Springfield with camoflage textures on the scope and wood.

make sure it's in 256 indexed color.

how do I do that.

-edit-

Does the fact that I'm using a jpg converted to a bmp file as my camo mean anything?

If your using Paint Shop Pro, just press "Ctrl+Shift+3" and make sure its at Optimized Octree and not Optimized Median Cut. Median cut will reduce the pictures quality. If your using anything else, I dunno but try anything under the Color tab.
