[Rel] M1 Garand V3

Just a quick side project I did when I got bored of all the fiddly metal parts on the STG44 :p

All new wood skin here, I've slapped the same thing onto Sproily's Garand but I don't want to release it until I get around to doing metal for it myself. Feel free to PM me bribes though.

Fantastic, looking great, nice to see another high-res garand, only thing is the 2048x2048 normal that seems a little overkill.

Good point, it is easy enough to resize yourself though ;)

looks good.

A point about 2048x2048...

I conceed, even though I used this size myself, that 2048x2048 is a bit of overkill. RARELY will you be close enough to tell the difference or see the extra detail. I only made my player skins that size for the FEW times you actually would get that close, usually in death cam. Mipmapping will kill most of that detail from a distance anyway.

For the most part the weapon v_models do not ned 2048x2048, they never get close enough to the screen to see the extra detail. there are however 2 exceptions - the Garand and K98, both when in ironsights mode. At that point ANY special little details added to the rear receiver will be PLAINLY visible. So I have to say when it comes to the Garand and K98 2048x2048 is the way to go.

Also, I think ANY size over 512x512 for a weapon w_model is real overkill. you have to take into account perspective. A w_model weapon is about 1/10th the size of a player model, which means you have 1/10 less area to sqeeze in the skin. All the detail is simply lost.

Yes, I have been doing that for a few of the more recent releases. It doesn't kill my fps or anything, I'm just trying to make sure it won't eventually when all my models are replaced with higher-res skins like this. The skin really does look fantastic though, and that STG44 looks like it will be money when it comes out.

They are from one of the many player packs out there, sorry I can't remember which.

Thank the gods for Gen. You are the best texturer ever.

I love your work and the normal maps are excellent!

Are you working on a stg44 as well? I need a whole set of gen skins because noone else comes close to this quality.

It looks seksee. But I have a question, is it because of the high resolution of the texture and map that the skin on my rig looks like colors are meshed together? (ie I see small purple/green/blue dots)

I havn't noticed anything like that sorry, maybe you're having a problem with the normal maps :confused:

Damn... thats a good skin. I just wish I could kill the reflectiveness of the top part of the garand. Would make it feel more "wood" like and less plastic like.

The normal map probably exaggerates that look, personally I like it but removing the normal map might help you.

I think the default VMT goes:

"VertexLitGeneric"
{
"$baseTexture" "models\weapons\v_models\garand/v_garand"
}

I'm sure somebody will correct me if I'm wrong.

Excellent. Are you ever going to reskin Sproily's garand?

I agree, the rifles with ironsights definately can take advantage of the 2048x2048 maps, but when there are 2048x2048 normals and texture maps for an entire set of player skins, resizing becomes a bit more of a hassle doing it for both axis and allies seeing as there are 20 or so to do.

This is now perfect. Thank you ever so much Gen. Are the B.A.R. and the Springfield to recieve similar treatment in the near future? (call me an annoying world model obsessed git if you want... I've been asking for world models for each release of yours...)

I'm considering getting rid of sproily's just to use this skin, THATS how good it is! :cool:

However if you release this for sproilys i will bow at your feet in an amazed glory!

And Put a sling on either sproilys or the default and i will pay you:
$1,000,000,000,000,000
(as close to a bizillion i dare go)

Hehe, I think I fixed my problem. My resolution and monitor size was too small for the high-res, so I just resized it. :) Great skin!
