[REL]dod_anvil (final)

Here you go...the final dod_anvil release this year.
First brush built: 11/4/2004
Final map released: 2/3/2006
Slow as ever.
Map is a 100% new rendition of my DoD 1.3 dod_falaise map. It is NOT a port. From Release Candiate 2 (dod_anvil_rc2) this map is faster-paced, has better fps, less stuff to bump into, is fully HDR-compliant, more detailed, 32 regular spawn (no instant combat) points, 100% new lighting, addition of kubelwagen and 222 as flag-objectives, windows that break on touch, replica dod_falaise castle (looks like crap) but most of all...IT'S DONE!!!!

I know the feeling man....
Dozens of things you see that you always want to improve
Hundreds of people asking you to add something or "try this"
You gotta wrap things up and call them finished (whether they are or not) at some point! :D
I'm sure you wouldn't have called this final unless it was a really decent compromise in your head. I ALWAYS loved Falaise; You may remember way back in the day when it was first released I, as well as others, championed the idea of getting it included in the "official" map rotation, which to our joy it eventually did.
Thanks for taking the time to turn a great DOD map into a new DOD:S map for me to kill people on!

Okay, second reply to this thread.
I just wanted to take the time to point out something I have always said - it's the little details that make or break something. This map abides by that creed 100%. Look at these 2 examples (of many I saw) -
http://img56.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dodanvil00038cp.jpg
Look at those stone steps. They are worn from hundreds' of years of use. This is a very common sight in Europe. The average mapmaker would just have thrown in flat steps - it's easier, less polygons, and frankly many just wouldn't think of it or consider it an "insignificant" detail. I believe these type steps are found in the standard valve maps, but I tell you I could count on one hand the number of user-maps that have made use of them.
http://img138.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dodanvil00020gc.jpg
Look at the hole closely. I love the attention to detail here. Brick inner wall with plaster finish. 2 very distinct layers. Floor is strewn with rubble from the wall (when the hole was blasted in it)
Sooooo....
Just in case you thought nobody really paid attention to or cared about details on which you worked so hard, I'd thought I'd let you know FD that yes, some of do notice and do appriciate the extra effort :D

Thanks for the nice feedback guys. I don't think there are any major bugs/faults with it outside the roundstart sound loop herky-jerk you'll get. That settles down quickly. I also clipped it all to heck and there are only a few places I allow you to climb up on things. There was at least one place in the map durring testing a few months ago where you could fall through the map but I fixed that and have not heard of any other issues like that. The detail I put in the map isn't unique...look at salerno, sora and diijon and you'll see the same kind of stuff.
What's more important to me however is the gameplay and that should work out fine. You do have a imbalance of sorts...the allies can reach the mid-cap a tad earlier than the axis IF they don't fight each other trying to get out of spawn, but the axis have better approach shots to the tank and can get to their one and two flags faster than the allies can get to theirs...so it's asymetrical in that sense (kinda like weapons balance in a way). I've been told by the devs it's the second most balanced map in playing rotation after Flash so it'll be interesting to see how she goes now that my forward spawns are gone.

It's a great map an all, Fuzzdad, but I can barely stand playing it. The weird hitching/lag/jerkniess is extremely bad for me when I join and at the start of a new round. I get 1/3 fps (yes, one frame every three seconds) for over 45 seconds during both. I appreciate all the work you put into it, but I'm going to have to avoid anvil :(

I'd like to say its a good map. I genuinely want to say it. But my frame rate locks itself at 0 - thats right, rock bottom. I can't move and all the sound is stuttering. From what I did hear, it does sound like there is some ambience now in the map, which is the only good thing I can say. I simply cannot do anything. I'm going to try pratting around with my system to get a higher frame rate, but I am disappointed that I can't even get out of spawn to see the great work.

I think this map is worthy of inclusion to every server rotation out there (if they have downloadurl capabilities).
Even better would be for this map to be made offical, so everyone can enjoy it :)

Sorry about that...there's something in the map I can't identify which causes some users to get more than their fair share of round start stutter...I'm really not sure what it is. I'm going to ask some folks I know if they could look into it. My guess is there's one entity causing it for only certain users. All my attempts to isolate it failed and you and one other guy are the only ones who reported the zero-frame-rate issue. Try renaming your config files and let Steam and DoD rebuild them from defaults.

I noticed that you don't have the camera views of the major areas anymore like for rc2 so all the sounds could be cached? Maybe that'll help? I noticed cliffe used it for Kalt this time around teehee.

Yea...i took those out because they were adding to some of the round restart issues. BTW...I also have now had that bug where you try and connect to a game of anvil but you get a looping sound deal and it's unplayable. It only happens on some servers...not all. I deleted my "special" config and went to a default config and it ran fine...so there's some CVAR causing it in conjunction with some server setting. I tested it on both Linux and Windows servers and we never had that problem (see...you can even test, test, test...and not catch everything).
I'm not going to update the map unless it get's too far out of hand.

Yes, I know. More than you realize :)
I was referring to user-made maps. Most of them overlook details like this. Yours did not. It makes a difference! (that was my point ;) ) And personally I like Dijon but no, I found to many aesthetic problems with it. As a matter of fact I could point out about a dozens little things on that map that could actually use more visual attention. It just does not look convincingly real to me yet, but it is still a work in progress I think. Sora I have already sang praises of.

I also had this problem on rc2. I've played it before with about 6 people on the map but never had any problems. I joined a server that was running it and had a lot of people in it and my fps was locked at zero in the allied spawn and I couldnt do anything.
I had all my settings on low. Here is my system.
P4 3.0 Ghz
Radeon 9800 Pro 125mb
1.5 Gigs of ram
-heapsize 900,000
thats all that I can think of that would be helpful in trying to fix the problem. I can't check the final version though right now, my 9800 broke :-( It's on its way to ATI right now.
Looks pretty sick though, I wish I could play it.

I experienced a lock yesterday as well, but I am 99% sure this is a source engine bug and has nothing to do with the map itself. I have locked on other maps as well (official maps) so it is not just this map in particular.

Try copying your configuration files to a safe place and let Source rebuild them for you. That worked for me on the one server I couldn't join. I do think there's an entity or something in the map causing it and I'm going to ask my friends at Valve to look into it for me.

For you and anyone else who has had this bug do me a favor if you can find the time. Try and replicate it except this time start DoD with -DTI. To enable DTI, the Source engine (client) must be started with a special "-dti" command line parameter, e.g "hl2.exe -game mymod -dti". Then DTI runs automatically in the background collecting data about all transmission activities. Just attempt to connect to the game server where you had the loopy deal and sit around at 1-5fps for a few minutes. Then quit the game or run the console command "dti_flush" and the engine will write all collected data to files in your mod directory. You'll be able to see the files in your dir because they will have "DTI" in the file name. There should be three files but the one we want is "dti_client.txt". It should be small enough to post here.
You can also attempt to start recording a demo as well. I really think something in the map is causing the abnormal amount of herky-jerk at round start and I'd love to get a root cause.

No...it's not normal and that's part of the overhead sequence i was speaking of in my earlier post. I cannot pin-point the cause of that...it's intermittant, it hits on some server and PC configurations (doesn't seem to happen if you use a Valve-default client config).

Well I just got around to having a look at it and I must say it's exceptional work, as good as it gets. I like the lighting especially, nice ambience. Extremely clean and well thought out, doesn't feel cluttered. With the lack of official maps provided I would highly recommend valve picks this up and throws it into the rotation as is.

Oh good I'm not the only person to post a little bug :p
I understand the map is final, and these are very small discrepencies which don't take away from the stunning work you've done on the map. But it's always useful to know these things should you start working on another project soon (which I'm sure we all hope you are ;) )
Firstly, Allies spawn. The shadows cast by these pictures apparently hanging on the wall are very odd!

Thx for the bug catches...if Valve ever decides to buy it (one can hope) I'm sure they'll fix it. The only reason I'd release another version of the map would be to fix the stutter problem. The only issue is, and this is a major one, I can't figure it out.

Don't know if this has all been resolved, but i think I found the problem.
I think Anvil is an absolutely fantastic map, my absolute favorite in source and was very happy about being on board for the beta testing on Sunlits :D
At one point I started having problems with this thing where my ping jumps to 700+, the "In" (on net_graph 3) is at 1340 and everything extremely stuttery.
I tried your (FuzzDad) advice and removed my config to use defaults, which worked.
After going through every line in my config, comparing it to the defaults, changing a few of them -> connecting to our server, changing a few more, connecting again.....etc.
I found that if you (like many people do) have your cl_updaterate set at 100 you get the stuttering on Anvil. if you set it down to e.g. 50 its fine.
(If you've connected and it stutters set your cl_cmdrate and cl_updaterate to 50...wait till it settles, then set it back)
Hope this helps a bit! ;)
