Very good to see your doing something like this for the community!
To make the contest a bit more fair, maybe introduce some more guidelines as to how the map should be constructed to prevent people submitting maps they've been working on for 3 years? Just an idea!
travis

Good idea and it's wowing me that you are putting in $500 of your own money, you should have it so people can't port works that weren't originally made by them as i'm sure we are all for creativity and originality.

Some questions:
Can maps released before the start of this contest be submitted?
How many maps can a single mapper submit?
You say that the map needs to enter the top 10 in order to win. The question being, win what? I suppose the 500 USD prize goes to the top ranked map? Or are you sharing this 500 USD prize among the top 10 mappers with a smaller amount as ranks go down?
What's the limit date to enter the contest? You may not have a clear date for the voting, but having a deadline for mappers would help us plan our work.

Hi El Capitan
Thanks!!!
What ever the map is, players will decide if the map is good or not. I have almost every new released DOD:S run on my DOD:S servers, some maps has been there for 3 months and it's filling up the server, and some maps players disconnect so fast I removed the map in 2 days.
I'm not a mapper, just a gamer loving DOD. My drive is to get more mappers working on custom maps so we can have fun and enjoy the game like the old days. Lets bring back the old days of DOD to Source.
Cheers, Kurt

Hi Travis,
You and I played on Kustom Kettlein the old days, I beleive your tag was Red snapper I think.
You have an awesome map Sherman, lots of fun... Maybe you can bring it back??? I like to see you in the contest;)
It would be a waste to see some awesome DOD 1.3 maps lost forever...agree?
Cheers, Kurt
-=SS=- Kurt
01-15-2006, 10:18 AM
If a mapper has been working on a map for the last 3 years now, it's time to finishing it off and start playing.
Is it good enough to win $500, only the players playing the map will know and decide.
Cheers, Kurt

Hi Furyo,
Can maps released before the start of this contest be submitted?
Released maps don’t qualify, because I want to see more and better maps.
How many maps can a single mapper submit?
NO limit
You say that the map needs to enter the top 10 in order to win. The question being, win what? I suppose the 500 USD prize goes to the top ranked map? Or are you sharing this 500 USD prize among the top 10 mappers with a smaller amount as ranks go down?
1 winner $500, decide by stats on map rank and -=SS=- member will vote on the top 10 maps registed.
http://supersports.hlstatsx.com/hlstats.php?mode=maps&game=dods
What's the limit date to enter the contest? You may not have a clear date for the voting, but having a deadline for mappers would help us plan our work.
I will set a time line next few weeks depends on # of maps entered the contest, I would recommend mappers get the map done ASAP, let the map run on the -=SS=- servers, so you can see the results. If it doesn't do well, maybe more revision is required.
Cheers, Kurt

Yeah I thought that was you, I used many different alias's prettymuch a new one each time I joined a server :P i'm a rather high-profile dod player :P it avoids the stigma
silly snappa would have been it btw :P
btw, heya Travis. Another random time seeing you, eh(rimshot). Time to get the game head on! It's been a while, but you can do it!
Cmon Furyo, you can do it! Apply everything you learned from all those dijon playtests we did!
GingerLord, I know we missed you birthday, but fo it anyway! Come back to source, you old codger!
FuzzDad, comeon, pick up the gauntlet!
Anvil is awesome (it's really my favorite source map, no offense to anyone else). but come on you old fart! Rise to this challenge! (insert mental viagra joke here).

So according to your link, the top 10 is decided by the number of kills that have been made on said top 10 maps, because "the higher the number, the more time the map has been played for"?
That might be a little biased. Small tight maps where people meet a lot would be at an advantage over some larger maps where people can hide better, where the action isn't so intense?

Wow, good on you for this. Anyhows I suggest that the 500 be split (250, 150, 50?) provided you get enough decent entrants. The 2nd and 3rd places will have had just as much work put in to them.
I think a month is a sensible. Remember Fuzzdad has been working on anvil for more than 6 months...
Well I'll get on with my prome remake for source.
-=SS=- Kurt
01-15-2006, 11:00 AM
Hi Furyo
Just look at Bleakhill2, it's a big map and fill up the servers everytime is on.
Lerouge and tiger are small but quick action maps. Really depends on the mapper. Lerouge is a old map but does well. Some pretty maps just came out, lack of action and players get bored.
Oh yes, think back to the old DOD 1.3 days, Sherman is a big map but did very well. A map need to be balanced and challenging. So players want to play it over and over again.
Cheers, Kurt

I will put out $500 US dollars, let all the mappers register on the contest vote on it.
1) $500 win all by 1 mapper
or
2) $500 be split ($300, $150, $50)
I'm flexable, lets get it going... show me some awesome fun maps and I will pay out.
Good luck!!!

If the timeframe was just 1 month and I were to start from the moment I hit 'submit reply' theres no way I would be able to finnish in time personally, i'm a moderately busy person and do have a bit of time to map but 1month, dunno bout that tbh

Salute, Kurt Well prome was never actually finished. At the beta stage I got some sort of weird error I couldn't fix. I think I may know what it was now but that was quite a while ago.
Because of that it never had a proper 'release' so I never got any real feedback. Nice to know some people enjoyed it though!
I've been inactive map wise as my comp needed an upgrade before a week ago. But I'm back now.
travis I think he wants an unreleased map within 1 month. Could be something you've been working on aslong as it's not released. At least that's my understanding. I think it's a good idea as many mappers start something but don't finish.

2 months - Lets make the contest end March 15th 12:00pm EST, then both -=SS=- 32 players servers will only run maps registered in the contest; stats to be collected and decision can be made. Prize money will be paid out on March 31st, 2006.

Hi Streamlinedata and Buzzard, -=SS=- clan mappers please note...
The pot of $500 is set, but some mappers would like to see 3 prizes, because they are going against with some very good mappers. Point taken and it's fine with me.
Therefore I'm changing to the following:
First Prize $300
2nd Prize $150
3rd Prize $50
If 1 of you or both win any of the 3 prizes, then I will pay out double or triple. If you didn't win I will pay out $100 for each map you created, same rules apply. Just a little incentive to be a DOD:S mapper on the -=SS=- clan.
Good luck!!!
Kurt.

Great idea Kurt!
I don't know whether 2 months will be long enough but I am looking forward to seeing the results.
It's a shame that objective based maps aren't implemented yet. That would have given us a much larger variety in maps...

They need to have a working Mini Map ;)
Nothing discourages peeps faster then being lost on a new map. Once they form a negitive opinion, to them, the map will suck for all eternity.

A big part of my map are the custom models. I could potentially collect money for material I did not make. I'd rather avoid the headaches and release a free version I don't have to worry about.

Fellow members,
[MG]TiZ here. Wow, I have been so busy the last month and a half, I didn't even know there was a competition. I have completely revamped my idea for my map dod_zendungraph.
I started from scratch and have the structure complete. I will be entering the competition today. By the way, we are all using DOD models that come with the stock maps, I think its just a matter of creating your own CSG portion of the map and using game models to make it more realistic. If it was down to creating the models themselves as well, then heck we might as well insist on creating our own textures. This is no doubt not a feasible expectation of the "junior" mapper. I think straight up creativity and originality is what the primary goal of the competition is. I think anyone who has put the hours in it takes to create a complete from scratch custom map, should enter it for the hell of it, even if they think they can do better on it, there is always version 2. Dont get me wrong, lets not submit maps that we can make in ten minutes and are boring to play after 30 seconds. I am excited, however I think for the next competition, you should give at least 4 months. This is one third of a year and will generate better results among us. Dont get me wrong, just the pure idea of this competition is kool, it takes alot of work to set something like that up and really brings people together who have busted their humps on creating maps. I cant even begin to tell you how many times I get in arguments with my girl over the fact im spending time mapping, in her eyes its all the time, to me its........ " one minute women, I have couple more walls to put up, then I will come out while I compile what I have done for a test"...... <<<hahahhahahah ,, that never goes over well.... Anyways, I talk to much, looking forward to the comp.....

I will run my final compile tonight for tomorrow. If it is easier for you, I will upload to our servers and supply you with a direct link to upload it. I can e-mai the link to you if you want instead of posting it here, this way no one else can just download the map.
I will e-mail you at Kurt.panzermeyer@sympatico.ca tomorrow between 11 and 12. If you need anything specific from me, you Can e-mail me at admin@murdergrounds.com. Looking forward to the results of every ones maps.
The map im submitting dod_zendungraph_b1 is only 50% complete from what I want. But in time version 2 will be out.

Kurt, when you say 12.00pm do you mean midday or midnight? Just wondering:P
Plus will people loose any points or whatever for using the extension? Bottom line is I can release a slightly less unfinished version if I have a few more hours to play with tomorrow, which would obviously be preferable.

Please allow me a 24 extention until tomorrow 12 noon 16th. My compile went sour after the wife tried to use my box while I went to the store. So I just need to recompile it and get it to you. I have e-mailed you a little while ago requesting the 24hr extention........Thanx again and let me know.

After I asked that question, I started up dod:s and did a search for dod_harbor_b5. I found it playing at the ss clan server, it allowed me to connect and download it. I played with 4 other guys.
I must say, very nice map man, runs really good !!

-=SS=- Kurt,
It's almost 12 noon. I have completed my map and it can be downloaded
here http://murdergrounds.com/DODSource/maps/dod_zendungraph_b1.bsp.bz2
However I am finishing a better compile right now that will not be
complete for at least an hour. You can download the better version
here http://murdergrounds.com/DODSource/maps/dod_zendungraph_b1.bsp
at 1:30. Depending on point reduction, I would prefer to use the second
link since I made many adjustments in the last few days. Please let me know
what deductions points would be taken for a 2 hr late submission. I do have
the one done on time at the first link, but like I said the second links results
are much better............Thanx again for the chance to enter
I have e-mailed you at kurt.panzermeyer@sympatico.ca
Good luck to all, I cant wait to see the maps.....

Scoring info: http://www.ssdodclan.com/
*** Total scoring works like the ice skating judging, highest score from each map and 2 lowest scores are removed from the total points.
*** Additional details of each map assessment and scoring result are available on -=SS=- forum www.dodssclan.com

Hi All,
First I want to thank you all participated in the -=SS=- map contest and for all the judges’ thanks again for putting up with my very strict rules.
Since we have so many awesome maps, judging the maps has been very interesting and challenging task. Scoring of maps is opinion of each judge. It has been very rewarding to play on all the awesome maps, please keep producing more awesome maps & Thanks again for everything.
Due to the fact we are using different spec of computers and some Judges/players perform better on some maps than other maps, therefore scoring of the map varies. The driving force for the mapper should be a map for all classes of players, balanced, good looking, high FPS and great game play maps.
Total scoring works like the ice skating judging, top score and 2 last score are removed from the total scoring of points.
Thanks again!!!!
Cheers, Kurt

Thanks to -=SS=- Kurt and the entire -=SS=- clan for sponsoring this event and encouraging development of custom maps for Source.
Congrats to the winners!
And thanks to ALL the mappers for your generous (and often thankless) contributions to the DOD:Source community. If mapping was easy, we'd all be playing Counter Strike.
