disapearing shadows

Ok I need a bit of help. Something weird is going on and I'm not sure what I did to cause this.

The shadows that my trees cast don't show up now until you get close to them. They kinda fade in as you get close and fade out as you walk away...They used to be viewable from a far away distance.

Anyone know why?

Hmm nobody knows eh? It's a strange thing and it's never happened before. They only show up (fade in) as you get closer to them. It's like some distance - to - detail thing, or something.

Try adding a Shadow Control Entity (http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Shadow_control) to your map. You can specify shadow angles, length etc..

Try forcing the game to DX8.1 and see if it makes a difference. DX9.0 seems to be a bit dodgy. It was mentioned on the Source Wiki SDK Beta as being a problem. I ran across a shadow problems and went away with DX8.1. Didn't fix - but went away.

The thing is I've had the shadow control entity running the whole time, even when they were working. I've done something to prevent them from working anymore. Same with DX, it worked before. Grrr.
