Thought you guys would say that, heh, I lowerd the saturation levels, was a bit to blue. Also keep in mind that HLMV shows colors brighter than reality in game.I put up new pictures with first person view in game. You can see the blue barlely stands out. Any less and the blue will hardly show.

You know, you can do this by using a specular map with a blue tint - it'll look much more realistic.

How do I go about doing that using CS2? Use a blue channel? Tutorials some where? Wiki boards are hard to understand for medium to novice skills.

Well in short, you leave the base texture as is. You can then take it, make it grey scale and use that to make a alpha type map where white should be the most reflective parts and black non-reflective.
Using that you create a specular effect telling it to use your greyscale image as the mask. Depending on the grey level, it will reflect more or less of the environment map. You can tint the reflection blue in the VMT.
I must confess I can't think of a good example off the top of my head but take a look at some of the HL2 weapons like the shotgun. That uses a specular channel to make parts of it reflect the world around it.
Basically you would keep the base DoD:S texture to give the basic metal appearance and the specular channel gives realistic reflections. Careful blue tinting of the specualar channel will give the blued metal effect.

That model looks like it's out of a cartoon hehe. Unless that's just what DoDS looks like on low =0

It's low res.

Ok I think I'm getting closer, made it grayscale and worked with an alpha and clipping mask, here is the result, thanks for the advise Jed, these are high res ;) .

The k98 came fresh off the assembly line into the hands of the german military, with a black gray finish that was blued to prevent rusting. As time went on the finish would wear off, and you would see progressivly different hues of blueing.
You probably never knew this because most of the pictures on the net are of very old and poor quality condition rifles, that appear all silver or gray metal, and have been in warehouses for years under poor conditions.

Hey what can I say, I'm a noob with source files. Made alot of 1.3 skins, but just relearning this stuff all over, I try.
Off on vacation for a couple weeks, so you wont see a finished product untill the end of Jan., might put up the scoped version with it.

Okay this is the part where I get lost. How do you / what do you use to create the specular effect? I know how to make a normal (bump) map, but is there a simple tutorial on the specular effect?

As I said before, best thing to do is look at the VMTs for some of the HL2 v_model weapons. I think the shotgun uses one.
Basically you define the specular map in the VMT and tell it what the source is - be it the alpha channel of the base texture of a sperate image.

Very nice, this skin has gotten a must use from me. As far as rare(er) models of the K98 are concerned, does anyone know of any good pictures of a K98 with a bakelite stock?

wood texture is nice but looking rather bland at the moment. Maybe add some wear and tear and a more defined light source and it will be perfect.;)

Yeah, I was aiming for the new issued look, instead of the used and abused look, my problem with the wood is I get it on the gun and it looks to grainy, and un natural in the game. Needs some more work, I might put the stock wood model for download in the meantime.

That would be real noice if it was darker wood, you
should change the color and release both FBO ;)
btw- Are you usin my Josef Reskin??? :p
FBOTheLiuetenant
04-05-2006, 08:06 PM
Why of course Im using your Josef, I personally like the lighter wood, looks newer, but I knew it wouldnt be to everyone's liking so I am in the process of making a darker one. Oh and I tried blueing the metal, I think I got good results. Oh btw that pic is acutally darker than ingame, if that gives you an idea of how light the wood is.
