Custom light patterns

(note: this is a dod:classic question)
So I found out from the new editor that I could have been doing this for my classic maps all along and didn't know it...but I have one question:
How do I get the light to behave according to the custom lighting string I put in? I'm trying to make a danceclub-type area with unique lighting, but when I put in a string(say, AAZZAAZZAGLOTZAGLOTZ), it doesn't display like I ask. Do I just set the appearance to Normal or do i have to manually type in Custom or something?
Any help is appreciated.

There was a dance hall in dod_Lego Island, or Lego Island2, in dod 1.3 maps I believe, with flashing colored lights. You may get clues from that, or some body here knows exactly how to do it.

Been a while since I've used the old entities, but I think for any light to be changed in-game in any way, it has to have a name. If you already have tried that, then try shortening the custom light-sequence. I think I read somewhere that it only supported up to 11 letters.

Ah, that might be the problem Insta. As far as looking at legoland, I know how to make lights flash and such, I'm just trying to figure out how to have them blink in a pattern of my design, not like "Flicker A" or what-have-you.
Thanks for the help :)
