Waldo's Smart X-Hair (SS, no thumbnail)

Update:
1. Now looks better lower and higher resolutions.
2. Slightly easier per-user setup (hopefully).
3. Now zipped not rared.
Waldo had this great idea (http://www.dayofdefeat.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=59322=)
Notes:
There could not be multiple xhairs for all the weapons because it would all depend on what resolution you ran the game on and it would also change the xhair size to whatever your current size is anyways. Nice thought though.

Right-Click-Save
Mirror 2 (http://my.starstream.net/towtrucks/Waldos%20X-Hair.zip)
Installation:
1. Extract as-is to:
C:\...\Steam\SteamApps\Youremail@valvesoftware.com \day of defeat source\dod
2. Turn on DoD and open console.
3. Type in "exec xhair.cfg" without the quotes.
4. Usage:
Setting it up (Waldos Genius):
So here's the idea. Scale the crosshair to be just the right size to cover the outer limits of the shot cone of you gun. No matter how far away the target is, it's size in the circle represents how much it is covered by the shot cone. Is your target 100% covering the circle? Good chance you'll hit (unless other things like hit registration/lag/server/choke issues make you miss). Is the target pretty small compared to the overall circle? Then odds are you may miss.
Load up the game and some map
Find a wall at some medium range where you can see shot registrations
Fire a clip or two at the center of the target to create your shot pattern. Hold the gun exactly on the same target point for each shot (very important). If you turn on cheats (sv_cheats 1) and then do a cl_predict 0 you can turn off recoil. This lets you fire a whole clip (without moving the mouse) and have it all aim at the same target point. (I suggest unloading a clip full-auto with your own skill so the xhair matches you best.)
Without moving your mouse at all, hit N until it just encircles the shot pattern.

Question 1: Is this resolution dependant?
Question 2: Is this dependant on the crosshair size bar in the options?
Question 3: Is the xhair supposed to be different when I select different guns?
Question 3 1/2: If not, then what would be the appropriate binds (approx) on a 1280x1024 resolution setup.

1. Yes it does depend on your res.
2. Its best to use the console because the slider does not get the xhair very big
3. No its not.
3.5 I would sift through this topic (http://www.dayofdefeat.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=59322=). It would all depend. That thread does tell you how to get yours set up though.
Im going to update it later today that looks better at lower resolutions and Ill see about making it easier to get it set up per user.

Nice numbers, You didnt use N? Not a bad thing im sure yours is more precise. Also, just saying max res dosent mean anything, everyones monitor has a different max res.

You could either copy and paste the script in xhair.cfg to your autoexec.cfg, or you can type exec xhair.cfg in your autoexec.cfg. Just to be sure :).
I like the idea , but i dont think it's much use if you play rifleman and a dot type xhair would be more useful as rifleman.
I'll give it a shot with the auto's and report back.

Or better still, add "exec userconfig.cfg" to your autoexec.cfg, and then put your own personalised config stuff in the userconfig.cfg file.

This is kinda off topic but where did you get the worn flag control icons? They look really good.

If anyone is interested, and can tell me where to upload it, I made a config file for 800x600, which is as follows:
Basically, I made a config file for each class (k98.cfg, mp40.cfg, etc..) In these config files, there is a command to play a sound, so when switching between the configs I know which weapon I am on (which was made here: http://www.research.att.com/projects/tts/demo.html
I used Mike for the American and Reiner for the german weapons. Also, they are all edited so that classes with two weapons (eg. Machineguns) will switch over for each weapon...so pressing 2 will bring up your pistol, and change the crosshair to the appropriate cone.
I can probably recreate this in other resolutions with time, but 800x600 is what I personally play at, so thats all I worked with ;p
If anyone honestly wants to download it, I will find somewhere to post it up :p

Remember boys and girls, it is made for 800x600. I don't want to hear complaints about how it is horribly off at 1024x768. :p

N doesnt do a thing...
RayneJarre
12-07-2005, 07:51 PM
In mine or NotAGoats? Because in mine, N isn't supposed to do anything...b just switches between diffrent classes... :p
If NotAGoats, you must make sure you type in 'exec xfire.cfg' in the console in game.

wouldent it have to change acordig to distance ??
RayneJarre
12-14-2005, 07:23 AM
Nope, as explained earlier this is just a cone of fire, Take your hands and make an "O" with your index finger and thumb, now imagine that that is your cone of fire as you hold it out in front of you....all of your bullets will land in that area, because that is all that the spread is for.
For example, take this image:
Image (http://oregonstate.edu/~holtt/range/Cone_dgr.gif)
Now, imagine that the closer circle is your crosshair, even at a distance, everything is going to fall into that circle because of distance expansion, hence why objects that are far away look small.
If you need furthur proof, you can download and try my 800x600 crosshairs until I upload the 1027x768...just start a private server, and type in the console "sv_cheats 1" then "cl_predict 0". this will disable the recoil...press "b" to cycle the classes until yours comes up then stand at various disatances from the wall and fire away while keeping your mouse still...
You shall see that indeed the bullets will always fall in the circle, no matter the distance.
