EDIT. I've Had A change of heart on the name of the map.
So Thus forth the map shall be know as DoD_Arbres (french for tree btw) (I like french words)
here's that picture
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v191/n00bles/DoD_arbres1.jpg

Here's hoping I can get it finished, and I'll keep everyone updated.

All I see is props, where the skill at

Forests = Trees
Trees = Props

Not trying to be cheeky but it's true.
I'm currently working on the basic landmass of the map. That picture was for me really to see what It could look like when finished. thus lots of props at the moment.

A question I'm going to ask though is what could I use/make there instead of hedges to make the level more woodland like?

fern. Lots of it.

Btw, not sure if you're French or not but the map's name is French. You'll have a hard time finding Querty keyboard users to make a "^" over the e when they try to vote for the map.

dod_forest would be an alternative though it already exists so try and think of other names.

For those who would be interested in a bit of semantics, the "^" accent in French is a mark of old times when there would be an "s" right after the voyel that takes this accent.

Forêt used to be forest in french too. So did Hôtel (hostel) and Château (castle) derives from the word Castel, which is very close to its English counterpart.

/gets out of the classroom :)

3dmike (i think his name is) posted some ingame pictures of an environment map (as_recon), which looked good. it wasnt super lush with a bunch of foliage, but you can see how he successfully used large/long trunks and dense branches at the top to give it a deep foresty look.

go to http://www.lanmaniax.com and click on pimpage. then at the bottom you will see as_recon, click on it for pictures. the last picture is what im talking about.

Lookin' good mate. Great to see mappers stepping outside the lines of ordinary as DOD:S could really use a little locational variety. Way to make the new guy feel welcome Travis:rolleyes: .

he possibly made them himself. but i remember seeing very similar models out there already. you just need to know where to look.

Lol...in french we still use forêt, you're talking like we don't use it anymore =P

And map looks nice, I like the atmosphere.

I think he meant that in the past the word "Forêt" in French was "forest" with the "s" but the "s" has been dropped and the "ê" has replaced it

he didn't mean that the word "Forêt" has gone out of use in French

I can pretty much guarantee he made those models....everything in his maps are made by him (besides that deathmatch map) as matter of principle. Did you guys ever play dod_stuka?

Yes i played Stuka !

The Stuka Models look great
And that strikes up an idea guys haw about a crashed stuka in the middle of this Forest you can make it a capture point ether getting the servileness camera or vital documents from the plane for the allies to get and axis to get there and hold that point tell time runs out .

Also maybe an old cemetery out there as well .

Haw large of a map will this be?

Ah yes, thanks for the feedback so far.
That as_recon map looks good, but it's not really the style I'm going for. I'm more for that dead, sleepy hollow feeling forest (minus the mist of course) (maybe lol)
I also really like that stuka idea, so Kudos for that zuzu and cryptfiend.
As For Size, I'm planning on making some of the forest inaccesible, just to balance the map a tad. So the map size will be realtivly small. I'm more for a small group of soldiers fighting rather than 16 on 16 :).
I reckon 16 players would be the ideal size for the map I've got in mind.

so thanks again for feedback, and yes travis, theres alot more to the map other than props, just don't have any material good enough to show yet. :)

Lots of fog would be a nice touch, I love it in movies when people are walking through forest/field areas with fog, adds a lot of atmosphere... :carrot:

Very exciting. The urban yadda-yadda gets old. *hugs me dod_arras and verdun*

I've decided to go for an autum forest feeling. oranges browns reds and muted greens.
(just due to the trees I have currently suit this more)

I'll get a screenshot up soon of the more land orientated parts of the map other than just the props :)

Could a mod do me a huge favour, and change the name of this thread to [WIP]DoD_Arbres. Thanks in advanced :)

So Here's the Screenshot. Very WIP lol. and the low quality trees in the backgrounds are only placeholders until I get a 3dsky box in :)
Thoughts on the Season change? lol

You could release multiple seasons for it.

I miss playing winter Flash. :( I enjoyed changing to it at the first snowfall...

I can say I'm very interested to see what you come up with. If it doesn't kill framerates (I don't know) I would add as much grass as you can get away with.

Maybe a sandbag bunker or two, even possibly a trench, butyes nice to have no man-made buildings
Especially since a good chunk of WW2 was not fought in cities.

For your map I suggest this name: dod_boisée (woodland)

I think it's more appealing then simply named it tree.

My two french canadian cents...

Yeah I was thinking of calling it boisée, but I'm liking the sound that Arbres gives out :)
and as fuyro says the é would be annoying as hell for map voting.

And yes, there may well be some sandbag bunkers wile e coyote. and I'll try my best for as much grass as possible.

My two french canadian cents... Er. Correct me if I'm wrong...

...but "Abre" is singular for "Tree". and "Abres" plural for "Trees"?

My two proposed immersion quebecois cents. :p

This is looking too good to be true...
Most of the time when something looks too good to be true...

I like the autumn feel very much and it seems very atmospheric.
I want to warn you however.
This is a map that can easily go wrong on gameplay.
I fear that this will be a map that gets owned by snipers and MG's and that the other classes just serve as target practice.
Although that is very fun when playing as sniper or MG, it is a bit less fun when you're the bunny everybody tries to cap :D

I'm not too sure how you can prevent this, but I think some hills, lots of bushes a couple of trenches would be helpfull.

As far as I can see on the pictures you posted you do have some hills, if you make sure that a sniper/MG cannot overlook too great a distance from a hill than the troops can easily gain distance on them (and have a try at killing them) !

Don't worry, I'm keeping a keen eye out for gameplay aswell.
I'm making sure that there will be enough cover, that you can get to any one place by atleast 2 ways.
Just to dissapoint already, I'm just going to say, You'll be fighting on paths alot. as in woodland paths. so don't expect to get into most of the forested areas and hide among the trees. I'm just trying to give the map a woodland feel, but still keep the gameplay DoD like.

Yet again, thanks for all the nice feedback and hints.

I just thought I'd give an update. Yes the map had died. But that was due to losing the map in a tragic HDD failure.

I'm currently restarting work on it again. I've redrawn the layout, and it looking good. So keep an eye out over the next coming months (I say months, because I'm juggling this project with my band duties)

I'll post Screens when I'm happy with the landmass.
