Nice work so far!
However, most original WWII M1 Garand's I've seen (And I've seen quite a few) were made by Springfield Armory - not Winchester.
http://www.scott-duff.com/R618_70.JPG
I'd never say none were made by Winchester, because I don't know for sure. But I know the large majority of Garand's were made by Springfield.
Great work, though! Can't wait to see a final product!

Great job with the metal. I just can't wait to see what the wood will look like.
Just noticed this. Looking good, Sproily! :) Glad to see someone taking my request and running with it :) I won't be around in the coming weeks, but I'll get a fellow garand fan, collector and modeller to check in on this thread and give feedback, if you would like. He could really help you nail the skin as far as authenticity goes. :)
Also, one small additional request, if it's not a problem. Could you make the front sight blade flat across the top? That's the only thing I absolutely hate in DoD:S :|

Higgins, all Winchester M-1's were WWII.
Springfield Armory and Winchester were the only two manufacturers of M-1's during the second "Great War"
Harrington & Richardson, and International Harvester joined the ranks of M-1 suppliers along with continued production by Springfield Armory for Korea. Winchester did not produce M-1's after the contract was up during WWII.
I'm the collector that Zao referred to. I'll keep an eye on this for any blaring inaccuracies that may , but most likely won't arrise.
Looks great so far.

Looking good. The only thing I would say further about the skin is that the recievers for the M1's were hammer-forged steel and very, very, hard. It's extremely difficult to scratch them. The finish, parkerizing, is also very durable, and is actually a result of it chemically bonding with the metal as opposed to working like paint, which can be scratched or chipped off metal very easily.
Also, that serial number comes back to an early April '43 Winchester M1, which would have been originally issued with light grey parkerizing. So, the color could be lightened up to something similar to what you see in the pictures Higgins and I posted for historical accuracy, and the scratches could be toned down quite a bit. In the pic I posted of the Winchester, you'll see some pitting on the rear of the reciever heel. This is the most common form of wear I've seen on M1 recievers. Mine was badly pitted.
Actually, when I get home from class, I'll post a link to a zip file with a bunch of detail pics of the very rifle you're skinning there :) It was badly pitted, and re-arsenaled in 1965.
Other parts of the rifle would show scratches and pitting quite well, such as the gas cylinder, or the windage and elevation knobs. The trigger guard and floor plate, possibly. Also, different parts were finished at different times, and oiled with different oils and packed in grease for differing amounts of time. On many WW2 correct M1's, you'll see different shades of finishes on the different parts. One of my High Power club's M1's that my girlfriend borrowed has olive-stained windage knobs on a light grey reciever with a dark grey bolt and a black parkerized clip latch, for example. Color variation between all the different parts happens because the parts were stored in cosmoline, a heavy grease, and the finish absorbs the color. Just a neat piece of trivia you could run with if you wanted :) A good place to see this at play is at http://www.garandguy.com/ He has a lot of rifles in consecutive serial numbers with widely varying finish colors (note- The white stuff in the stampings is white crayon, purely for picture and show-off purposes :) )
Either way, it looks like you're coming along nicely there. :)

probably a stupid question, but im going to ask it anyway :).
Why can't the default animations be applied to this skin / model?
Sproily
12-03-2005, 10:33 AM
Not a stupid question at all, Didnt understand it myself either at first.
The thing is, Valve somehow used a newer technique for the hands, so if you decompile the model the hands are all crooked and.. just... wrong
We aint entirely sure what its about but we're trying to solve it.
So unless we get someone to animate it, we cant get it in source. 1.3 is possible
Mike-

ah, so the mp40 (new model, skinned by you) was made out of pure magic? :P

FIGUUR
12-03-2005, 12:27 PM
as i understand it, only the garand has this problem (as far as i know).... So it was not a problem for the MP40 to use the default animations (also a new model).
But thats sad to hear :( Hope there will be someone to animate it, the skin and model looks very good.
Btw, not to hi-jack this thread, but what happend to the FG-42? Haven't seen anything about that for awhile... Same problem (animations)?

I will give you that, because no one likes aiming with that big huge block at the end, but in reality, it wasnt that obtrusive, because its small size made it just fine for its purpose. But anyways, I realize why you did it, and it looks good nonetheless.
