Bit of an ask man, Best thing to do would be absolutely BEG someone in the modelling forum to make some but even then I cant see it being something that will easily be done. dod and hl2 in general are really in need of some good mapmodels so maybe someone will step up..

Wonder if tolchok is doing some

I ported the dod 1.3 dod_forest pine tree.

Still need to fix the snow texture though. Perhaps I shall post it if I can get my pc going.

There is a pine tree model available on the following page but it is not "winterized". Its texture could be altered in about 2 minutes time to make it "snow covered".

http://www.uni-weimar.de/~viehoefe/hl2/

P.S - The trees look like crappola in the pic he provided, but ingame they look quite nice.

So Travis, I am just wondering what you have contributed to the community, since this is the second thread you have been a prick on.

Show us some work that you have done so that we can all be in awe of your great and ever powerful presence.

He's entitled to his opinion, and though it wasnt positive, he didnt get personal, you did.

Lets not start a flame war, this comment has nothing to do with finding pine tree models.

Id suggest dropping it sir, and no one responding to such remarks.

A buddy of mine is making a map, and he used the deciduous trees, and although they aren't perfect, they do look better in the map than in the pic, and they actually cast a shadow, which is a nice change from the "stock trees." So if anyone has debated giving them a shot, I would recommend at least seeing what they look like compiled.

BTW, they do look odd with full-brite on, but once you apply the correct lighting, they fall right into place.

Another thing is the collision box surrounding the trunk of the tree. You need to modify it so that you aren't so far away.

Again, these aren't perfect, and like ultranew_b said, it's something.

Although they belong to Valve now, I will eventually port my tree models to Source. I intend to sex up the trunks (fnarr) and I've got the original textures at double the resolution of the HL1 version.

These trees are nice. The other cool thing is they cast a shadow in game, unlike the "stock" trees that valve uses. Gives a nice effect. Watch out for the ivy, someone is making dod_tiger, they used the ivy from this pack, and it creates a black shadow behind them, and looks very odd. For ivy decals, stick with the VaLve decals, they work better!

Set "disable shadows" to "yes" :D

How the heck do you get these trees to show in DoD?

There's a .vmt, .vtx, .phy, .wd, .vtf and a .mdl...I tried just dropping the .mdl's in but they don't show up.

Mr-Softy
12-23-2005, 02:03 PM
copy the .mdl into your Steam\SteamApps\username\day of defeat source\dod\models folder then in hammer make a prop_static and browse for the model

3eamus
12-23-2005, 02:30 PM
Yeah no that's just not working. I created a new prop static entity, I can see the tree names in the hammer model browser but all I get is an empty wire frame box when I apply it. Weird.

You need all 6 (it should be 6) files plus the materials on the side

3eamus
12-23-2005, 05:11 PM
ok so just dump em all in the models folder? Or my new "trees" folder which I created in there...

If I was making a map, I would tell them that, but since I'm not, they can have their shadows.

Hey can I please grab that pine tree from you? I'm in desperate need of some decent trees and I can't seem to get the above ones working...Perhaps you could email it to me? contact@aeropause.com

cheers

Ok thanks a lot, got 'em. See now this is what I don't get. I dumped all these files in my models directory but they don't show up in the game...I set them as prop static..what am I missing here?

Shape
12-25-2005, 08:29 AM
For some reason I can't get props_static to work with that model, props_dynamic works though! :)

Not sure if there's a performance difference in game using the wrong one?

3eamus
12-25-2005, 12:33 PM
Ok I'll try dynamic, thanks. But what's with all the other non-MDL files? Where do they go, or do they all just sit in the models folder? (Had a hard time finding a guide on where to put all those files).

OK @#$%*& hell, why is it so difficult to install new models? Dynamic doesn't work either. Could someone out there be so kind as to tell me where all these model files go? For example, those being:

smrk01.mdl
smrk01.phy
smrk01.vtx
smrk01.vvd

I would be ever so grateful and consider it the best Xmas present ever.

You mean you dumped all those file extensions (above) in the same models folder? If so then that doesn't work.

C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\*email*\day of defeat source\dod\models\palmy\

Try adding the folder palmy then put the files there, I'm not sure why it isn't working.

3eamus
12-25-2005, 02:15 PM
Ooooooh ok. it almost worked...I see Mr. Palmy now but it's missing the texture haha. I get a pink tree with black checkers...almost!

Shape
12-25-2005, 03:23 PM
Lmao, nice!! Try refreshing the SDK?

3eamus
12-25-2005, 03:36 PM
:-(
I was hoping that'd do it, but no. I wish there were more tree models out there aside from the crappy ones supplied..like some birch, redwood, dougless firs...and actually cast shadows.

Shape
12-25-2005, 03:42 PM
Sorry I couldn't of been more help, I'm sure some of the pro mappers here might know what the problem is.

I'm going out now, I'll take a look later and see if I missed anything.

oh no prob. Thanks, I'll figure it out eventually.

12-28-2005, 09:52 PM
you need to put the .vmt and .vtf files in the C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\*email*\day of defeat source\dod\materials\models\palmy\ folder for the texture to be applied to the model

3eamus
12-30-2005, 03:57 PM
Hmm yeah but there are no .vmt or .vtf Palmy files included...maybe that's why it isn't working. I only have the following:

.mdl
.phy
.vtx
.wd

Shape
12-30-2005, 04:37 PM
I don't have those either, that's why mine aren't showing up if others try my map. :(

Does anyone know where to get a pine tree model? :D

3eamus
12-30-2005, 04:42 PM
Shape, yours works right? Can you put the pine in a Hammer .vmf file so we can copy/paste it into our working one?

Shape
12-30-2005, 05:31 PM
Ok, I can see the tree in hammer and when I compile. I sent the compiled map to someone and they had errors instead of a pine tree..

Yeah I still see the pink trees with black checkers in your Hammer file..hehe. Oh well, I'm sure someone will produce some sooner or later...I myself will try to export some from Max to MDL when I have the time.

I just took a bunch of pictures of pine tree branches a few weeks back. Im gonna see if I can atleast make some good textures for a pine model and maybe try to make one myself. Its such a pain in the butt getting the alpha all made up for the textures that I got bored with it after a few minutes last time I worked on it. :(

Well, if you do get it done, I would be greatful. I am looking for some pinetrees for my next WIP (dod_hill400/huertgen forest).
