From one noob to another, here's some tutorial pages that have really helped me:
Appalachian Killing Grounds - Source mapping (http://www.akilling.org/akg/)
and of course the indispensible Valve Wikipedia (http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Main_Page)
I'm sure by now you must have checked out the Tutorials Page on this site (http://www.dayofdefeat.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=41).

Is the greatest Source resource ever ... tbh

but you really should check out the mardymouse.co.uk site, that is where I learned most of my dod specific mapping skills.

Not that it solves your problem right now... but <marketing method='PR'>I am currently writing a book about mapping and modding for Paraglyph Press (http://paraglyphpress.com/)</marketing> which will be out.... some time next year. It's seemed to me for a long time that a book on this kind of thing would be really useful - and I guess I convinced a publisher of it at some point.

hahaha shameless plug Waldo! It's good news though, I also know someone who is writing a book that will be published about HL2 modding and all around help with various things that it involves including level design...
I would so write MAPPING FOR DUMMIES, it's got best seller all over it.

Boy do I wish these books were released, you guys could really be cashing in already. Since the release of HL2DM & DODS I've been approached by at least a half dozen friends and casual contacts about mapping with Hammer. Of course I directed each of them to many of the same tutorial sites being suggested in this thread. However, even though there is a wealth of online material available to the completely newb mapper I'd venture to say that a good 80% is targeted at experienced mappers. Unfortunately, the other 20% are so basic or inconsistent (Do I hollow or construct a building brush piece by piece? An often asked question once they've gotten past the "basic room" tutorials). So you get all these potential new mappers stuck in limbo land and most give up at this point. What someone with a lot of time needs to do is write a complete map tutorial from start to finish detailing every step of construction along with screenshots. It can be a very small french village, hmmm where have I seen that theme before LMAO, setting that covers everything a newb mapper would need to know from entities, brush construction, terrain geometry, texturing, 3d skybox, vis lines, leaks, etc. Then they could then take advantage of the excellent advanced tutorials available online. Hey, maybe it could become a community project that could be passed around amongst the better known mappers for all of them to help out and contribute?

Guys I need help with 1.3 mapping not source. My dod clan which is ranked pretty high in the server list plays dod 1.3 so I wanna make maps for people to enjoy.

in that case go to http://www.mardymouse.co.uk hands down the best single resource for getting started with dod1.3 mapping. plenty of tutorials and quick responses to questions.
if you have "specific" questions, someone on these forums could probably answer it for you, but most of us have moved on to source so you'll run into a certain amount of "lack of interest".
gl, mapping is a lot of fun and can be rewarding if you take the time to put out a good product.

My two cents for MardyMouse (http://www.mardymouse.co.uk) - it's a very good site.

If you're mapping for Source, try prop_static.

Pssst Waldo, he's said 2 or 3 times now that he needs help with 1.3 mapping. :D :p
I've got to agree with Uvhausen though. I've dreamed of mapping but I look at the tuts and am overwhelmed. Your book should do great Waldo. If its full of examples and screenshots, because I'm pretty retarded :p , I'd buy it even. :D

A book would be cool, I think I'd buy it just to support the cause ( There is a mapping charity that helps people making fun maps make goods one right?)
My only problem that a book would make a million more 'fresh meat' spam the forums with their 'fun maps' that consist of 6 walls, 23 leaks, 45 models, 1 spawn and a machine gun.
