Mapping for: 2.5+ years
First map: para_lecave dod 3.1b

Well... it's kinda hard to say.

I've started mapping with Worldcraft since I was around 10 (9-10 years ago) for Quake. Very small unreleased (and unnamed) maps.. but they were still fun with bots. I also did a bit for Quake 2, I *think*.

Then I stopped mapping when I was around 12 or 13.. (~2 years counting).

Sometime during this time I tried mapping for CS... but I don't remember if I actually did anything.

Then I started again with Hammer when I started playing DOD about 2 years ago (November 2003) and released my first map, dod_ac2fort-1b, and had MANY other WIPs.
Then I think during May 2004 to February 2005 I stopped mapping... don't remember why (~2.5 years...).

Then in February 2005, I started mapping again, and have been ever since.

So I guess I could say that I've been mapping for First-Person Shooters for ~3.25 years.
Inbetween all that, I was mapping for other games... Age of Empires, AoE 2, StarCraft/Brood War, Civilization 2/3, Caesar 3, Super Mario (on the TI-83+), etc... so I guess it'd be a total of 10 years or so.

Tried a long time ago with Duke Nukem 3D, made the house I lived in back then.

Tried dod_dijon on the HL engine (april 2003), dropped it all when I realized the HL engine would never handle what I wanted to do.

Been working on Dijon since December of last year, so all in all, I've only really mapped for 10 months on and off. Never released anything, and I've never worked on anything but dijon, which is the project I learned mapping with really....

Snap, think were showing our age there :D

I started mapping Duke 3D, Red Alert, Delta Force, BF1942 then then found Worldcraft (Hammer) back in 2001 and ive been mapping with that ever since,

Only the last year have I given it some serious time and every peice of work I do seems to get better and better but I really need to improve my brush work and learn how to model!

I started mapping about 4.5 yrs ago with Unreal. In January of this year I started mapping with Hammer. My first Hammer map was created for and entered into the Valve DM map contest (funny how money can inspire one to learn quickly :p)

Age of Empires and Total Anihilation were the first games I made maps for, which was about 1999. You started with a blank map and just put in units, buildings, water etc. tTe first fps I mapped for was moh:aa about 5 years ago, and spent probably over a year just making this one SP map for practice, having never used a brush-based editor before. Then, after a couple of MP maps, I started mapping for cod, made a few maps for that, then my one dod 1.3 map, before starting with dod source.

Oh good lord lets see, first map I made was way back in Duke3D, it was pretty much my house with strippers and aliens. Then HL came out and I was mapping before I finished it. Did a map of my school at the time and then did some TFC maps for a clan I was in, good times. Then some CS fun maps, most never got released. Dabbled in a bit of Unrealed and Radient around then and started dod mapping. DoD Bessin was my first released map, basically a village in a box and I liked it, church diving etc. Bessin grew and became Bierville, DoD Zug evolved to DoD Densityand DoD Dumm was the product of a bored 30 mins.

So I guess it must be...like 7 or 8 years.

damn, some of us are old guys! I've been mapping with hammer for about 1.5 years. I did some mapping for warcraft II, but it was so easy that I didn't even remember until I read some of the posts above. intersting stuff here.

Mapping for dod? Only started when source came out.

Did do a TFC map jointly with a clan member a long while back (about 3 1/2 years) called breakout - was like avanti.

Messed around off and on with worldcraft before that but never seriously.

Still not too good at this - persevering though!

Same! 1997 or so I think it was. DUke3d, then Quake 1, then on to HL/Counter-Strike (de_waterworks & de_dune).

Then this DoD thing came along and...

okay just for fun:

~10 years off and on..

games/editors

Doom2 / Waded, Doom Builder
Quake / Quest, Worldcraft, QuArK, Phase2
Quake3 / Q3Radiant
Soldier of Fortune 2 / SOFRadiant
Doom3 / D3Radiant
Call of Duty:UO/ Graydiant

and coming soon:

Quake 4 / D3Radiant
DOD:S / Hammer

I've only published a few maps but I love the process and enjoy the community!

Anyone interested in editors should check out Doom Builder http://drsleep.newdoom.com/editors.shtml it's simply the coolest editor I've ever messed with. QuArK also has some ground breaking features too.

Its always the way though isn't it? I myself have released I think 40 odd maps and have probably made 100+ most of all this was when I was learning and I'd get close to finnishing something then I'd realise how bad it was because I had improved and henve threw it away.... Some maps though that I got close with and really have no excuse for not completing, dod_maisy, dod_strayer both would have topped all previous efforts rather easily but they just never made it that far.

dod_maisy for source tho! it was also the name of the very first map I made but never released, damn it was bad!

I have 80+ .rmf files in my hammer dir.

I've been mapping for 11 years now. I started with Doom ||; then was stuck on rouge spear for the longest time; then of course, Half-Life came out and I spent most of my days in a dark basement making maps that never saw the light of day.

Overall, I'm picky as hell. I've only released one map to the public, and it was a CS map for CPL.

Anyone else too critical of their own work? I worked on a SP mod for Half Life for.. 2 years (Forgotten) and really never showcased anything; except small snippets on Moddb.

I'm strange.. and should really start releasing things.

Maybe I'll start with DOD: S

Btw, Hello :)

About 2.5 years, most of my mapping was in hl1dm. Did a couple of hl2dm source maps, two dod maps. I am looking forward to doing something for dod:source maps.

If I count levels for Jumpman, Boulderdash construction kit and Rally Speedway, I've been at it for about 18 years now ;) FPS maps for about 11 years (starting in the late fall of 1994 with Doom 1).

I've made maps for Wolfenstien 3D, Doom, Doom2, System Shock 2, Unreal, Half-Life, Quake3, Aliens Vs Predator 2, Counter-Strike, and now DoD Source. NONE of them released, very few 'finished' none good.

But I'm really working on my DoD:S map Le Baux, because with all that practice (not to mention being a sophmore in a digital arts college), I have to have *something* to show for all those hours spent compiling and squashing bugs.

I saw someone mention RTS games, so if you consider that, I tried it out a little, tiny bit on Starcraft, and dedicated on Age of Empires II, and a little on Warcraft 3.

For DoD:S, about 6 months.

TheMiede

8 Months for hl 1
2 Months for Source

Total mapping = 10 months

1 Project finished for hl1
0 Projects finsihed for hl2
