Motivation for mapping

Whats yours?!
I started nievely thinking I might get my map featured in a dod release lol, but as it seems that won't happen unless you work for valve, whats left? I find it really hard to make something that might get a few people saying nice things about it here, then whoosh into obscurity in a few weeks.

Think I might find a mod that needs mappers and try that. If the mod fails, atleast you were part of a collective and it all had some meaning.

Ahh never mind, just probably in a bad mood atm so flame aaway :P

I started out mapping for DoD because I get kicks from the feeling of creating stuff, especially when it's something that others can use as well (sounds much like a generic mod or GNU coder's motivation, no?). My previous job was making a live daily youth tv show, and I'm spending part of my present job programming applications.
Also, I've been making maps for Doom II and Duke Nukem, so it was a natural step to see what this baby could do. And it is really impressive compared to those others.

But you're right, you have to get it just right or your effort is criticized to death and forgotten witin weeks. And that effort is typically a lot of time spent by you. So yeah, if you're not willing or able to spend your "life" making maps that may or may not get anyone's attention, it's not worth it.
Me, I made a few maplets, liked it, but had to return to my real-life obligations before I could even begin to make a "proper" map. (I've got plenty of ideas I haven't seen anywhere though, but then again, who doesn't?)

The solution?
Be friendly and most of all constructive when giving critique in a WIP thread. Surely, most gamers are blissfully unaware just how hard it is to make playground fun, but those of us who do know of course should encourage others as much as possible.

I just got into mapping, i'm pretty sure I will stay. I love the idea of making my own world, not playing someone else's. There's a thread in the General section talking about custom maps, about no one using them. I think thats a problem, but what the heckzorz, i'll keep going.

same motivitation here. The ability to think out a world, actually creating it relativaly easy and actually walk in it!!

When i finished my first map, and played it on KK. I thought: "dang, these people and I are playing in a world created by my own brain" and it gave a pretty weird but pleasant feeling to know it. The fact that you can surprise people, that you just created the rules and the world in which t hey have to survive.

I can't really explain it but that's one of my motiviations.

the other ones are the fact that I like to be creative and do stuff like this. accomplish something and be proud of it.

something like that...

Creating a map is the most fun part, getting some people to enjoy it after its finished is the added bonus.

I made Bierville for fun and testing.

I didnt actually think it would get finished and/or onto a custom map server.

Guess theyres some freaks who like it.

I do it, so when people play my map, they have no idea how much work I've put into it...wait....i havent even released a map...But seriously, now that I've gotten into mapping, i have a lot more respect for these guys, of any map. Some of these guys make maps for free better than some that get paid...

And all that stuff about creating a world and junk...if only DoD had the custom map community that CS has...then i think more of our maps would get played...

Most dod maps are from outside Valve.

I started mapping b.c I needed a map setting for a upcoming movie. Otherwise I wouldn't have started. Now that I know the basics, this summer I'd like to try a real map.

I went through many many mods before getting in on DOD. Too many to name.

I started in 1999, with the hopes of getting a map in CS, which almost happened on a quite a few times but ultimately the map wasn't choosen :\. As DOD came out I started to shift to map in that, mainly since I saw CS was just going downhill and DOD was on the verge of becoming something big.

Plus I map since I really enjoy doing it. Nice and relaxing (except when you have to find those damn bugs)

EDIT: and some how my very first map, which had numerous versions, was (and maybe still is) in the top 20 DLed maps at zeroping. I don't know how it was since it was a rather bad little map. And no I didn't sell my soul to the devil.
