I am making a map with a bit of coast line (not really a beach map though) but I have a problem with the water. it ends at the edge of the map. I don't want to just make the water huge.
how do I make it look like it goes to the horizon?

Use a 3d skybox.
Do it kinda like this (ignore the "-") :
edge of map
V---------wall clip or some kind of obstruction
V---------V--------shore
V---------V--------V
|----3d---|---------\
|-skybox--|--water-/-land
|-water---|---------\
I'm still a big n00b with 3d skyboxes, but I imagine that's how it could work.

I am using a skybox but how do I get the water at the right level?
I read that you can't have water at different heights in view.
and for some strange reason, last time I compiled it came up with an error that the water had no bottom texture (or material, not sure exactly, should have copied the log file to clipboard  ) as far as I know, only the yop surface should be textured, the other 5 faces of the cuboid should be nodraw (shouldn't they?)

You can have the bottom face of your 3D skybox textured with water, which will produce endless water on all sides of your map.
The reason for your compile error is you used an invalid water texture. Make sure the one you use doesn't have any suffix at its end, much like the skybox textures.

to get the water the right level copy your sky_camera and your water into another box then paste them in there,
then delete the old one leaving you with the one u built onto it and the sky_camera... ohh and reduce the Scale of the water texture aswell :)
V---------wall clip or some kind of obstruction
V---------V--------shore
V---------V--------V
|----3d---|---------\
|-skybox--|--water-/-land
|-water---|---------\
and i aint gotta clue what i mean with that :P
