Hi. I did a search for this topic but could only find info on the curved street part and I wanted to get info on only the sidewalk part. I shale direct your attention to figure one.

fig. 1:

This screenshot was taken in Fuzzdad's map dod_anvil and if you'll notice the area between the yellow lines is a curved sidewalk. What I want to know is how does one create this brush with the sidewalk texture perfectly lined up like this. If anyone has this knowledge (Fuzzdad I know you do) please share it.

Thanks in advance.

and then rotating and moving each texture to look right? Hmmm I wonder if there is an easier way. Fuzzdad how did you do it?

my friend "pepper" in the trenches mod taught me how to do this.

click on the side face and only select that side. Then hold down alt and ctrl and right click the top face. and do that for each brush.

I remember a while ago there was a discussion about using a cylinder brush and cutting it out of a rectangular brush.

here a picture in hammer to show you how the brush are displayed. I have put the same texture FD used in his map. Once you have those brush made, apply the textures:

concrete/concretefloor028c_c17 (for the sidewalk)
concrete/concretefloor028d (for the corner)
concrete/concretefloor028c_c17 ( to create a edge to you street, this make it look better.)

For the texture, use the textures shift in x or y to place the texture and align them. For the side of the street, in the round part, you need to shorthen the inner part and then rotate you brush to fit in the circle.

Hope this can help you understand the process.

cool Coolhand but what about the outside curve of the street/sidewalk?

Yea...I stole the curved sidewalk directly from one of the released HL2 SDK maps...the one in the town where the big attack took place. Just copy it from there and you won't have to worry about spending days trying to replicate it.

Thanks Miede.. I kind of got it working but it didn't turn out perfect so I'm gonna fool around with it more tomorrow. This is gonna help me out a lot, thanks again.

actualy.. you can also use displacement mapping to make a curved sidewalk.. its an involved process and can take a while... BUT it will bend the texture enough to make it look decent enough.

Hah you learn something new every day  . This works really well, it makes the faces 90* to each other or something, I think I'm going to use it on everything now, my brush walls look a thousand times better because the textures line up perfectly.
Oh and BTW you only have to hold 'alt' :)

I love that feature! I read that on some random mapping forum only a few minutes after spending hours making a sidewalk similar to the one in the first post.

It would have only taken a few minutes had I known about that little trick.

Guys, "texture lock" is here for a reason. Just make one sidewalk ok, then click on "tl" in the toolbar, and copy and paste away, the textures will remain exactly in place, you can rotate them, scale them, do whatever you want :)
