What's the best tool to use in Photoshop for adding dirt to faces, and what's the best way to make the dirt look good?

I'd say to take a brown color, make a custom brush or use one that is spread out a lot and isn't a circular shape, and apply with either darken or color burn with a low transparency.

Overlay the brown with splotches of darker brown or black and lighter brown.

Just mess around :)

i did a sortof nubish set using a nice dirty looking brush with low opacity and running over a couple of patches. If you want to make it look good i would suggest very little blurring and making sure to use more than one color. For blood and such a used 2 colors a dark (for a deeper cut look) and a lighter one for spreading. Again a more detailed one would need flesh rips and obvious things like that. It took me roughly 3 mins per face so for a good one i'd say 10 mins per face. Oh yea and dodge and burn might come in handy too for adding shadow.

USE good brushes like the metal grunge ones. Then select a red, then colour burn and paint . Its a WICKED AWESOME way of making good blood.
OK BYE
