dod_anvil BETA to be released this weekend

Just a note to tell server admins I will be releasing, for wide distribution, a beta version of dod_anvil this weekend that you are more than welcome to use in rotation and make available for download. I'm not sure if it'll be Saturday or Sunday (pending outcome of final testing) but it will happen.

It will be annotated as beta and a bug list will be part of the release. There are visual errors w/the map that cannot be corrected until the SDK/HDR toolkits are released so I will ask you to be patient w/me until a final release is done. Playtests have been very encouraging and I'm excited to be in a position where I feel comfortable releasing the map.

For those who don't know, dod_anvil is a re-imaging of my official map dod_falaise. The pathways are fairly similar but this version plays much faster. Testing has also shown the map to be more gentle on PC's than the official maps (I use less "stuff") but not lacking, overall, in the looks department. Map size is in the 30MB range zipped to 11MB. Here's a few older pics I used to fix stuff.

There have been quite a few custom maps released already. Sure, most of them are of the four-walls-and-a-door philosophy but mapping is really hard work right now. Get this....I started on this map in November 2004. Almost a year to Beta...A YEAR!!!

As to Glider, no promises...damn mapping has sucked the life out of me and I'll need a break. And...I don't own the source code to glider so I could never release a glider remake as "Glider". I do hope Valve decides to redo one of my official maps...if for nothing else it'll sooth my mappers ego (lol). Then again, considering my maps are among the least played maps out there I can understand Valves reluctancy to rebuild one of them. I'd rather they take the time to put out new maps than old ones anyway.

I wouldn't say that. I think your maps are very popular. We've got glider, falaise-gap, flugplatz and factory on our server. All of them are played regularly. Did I miss any? If I did I apologize and if its not on our servers than I'll add them. :D

I'm not rryin' to brown-nose here, but Falaise is one of my favourite maps. It's just funt to play on, in my opinion.

Falaise was by *far* my favorite 1.3 map, and was very popular with our clan. Really looking forward to the Anvil release. :D

The only bummer is that the map won't be quite the same for me without the Scoped FG-42. :(

My favourite map is Glider. Glider has non-flag objetives, isnt linear, Secondaris Objetives, Need A lot of Teamplay, has Easter-eggs and is Fun.
Not always the most played map are the better maps.
See Dust and DUst2 on CS:S. Are boring with 0 details, but you will find 28799 servers with those maps.

I'll tell ya this right now. Finally we (will) have what I would classify as a true "DOD" map to battle on. No more smg sprayfests like the redundant stock source maps. This baby also looks the part too, in fact I'd say it surpasses the stockers even without HDR glitz. Time to dust off the rifles and MGs that have been hanging on your wall:D .

You have spent approximately a year on this and it definitely shows man, great work :) Ill be putting this on my server immediately and running it for 24 hours to make sure it is thoroughly tested and let you know if we find anything. From what I can see in the screenshots it should be an official map so long as the balance is there which I am sure will be ;) Great work, cant wait till its ready.

I downloaded a copy of dod_anvil-b7 from a custom map server, but I don't know if that's the copy that you've released (or are going to release).

I'm not going to add it to my server without your permission, though I know that my guys are anxious to play it.

If it's a legal copy, then let me know. If not, I'll wait until the real one comes out.

why did you change the lighting from earlier version? you might not have but it seems it has gotten lighter and architecture has been cut down also. might just be seeing things but would like to hear from you.

just went back to look at old pics and the new ones do look better. i think its just the giant church and houses in the skymap and the brighter lighting. the dark lighting made it seem crisper and gave it some dark cracks to awe at.

I've run around the B10 version of the map and it looks great. One of my favorite maps in 1.3, so I am very happy to see an update for Source. It appears as if you tightened up the routes a bit making the long streets shorter. How does that affect the rifle play?

I have not played the map, so I'm just curious.

Just playested it over at CoJ....


Seems a little 'over-done' in some spots... A lot of clutter to distract the player. Add to that spots where it's impossible to not stick to your teammate like the further spawn points and it gets a little 'jumbly' at times.


FPS on a PCX5900 gets me avg of 40-55 fps, roughly 15% lower than anzio. P4 530 DDR400 - FD, I would think without water it should be running near donner's level of fps for me. Won't matter wednesday [for me], but other players with lower cards might see the hit too.


It's still a fun map, feels *almost* just like dod_falaise of v1.3. It does take some team coordination to cap the map, there are the two main bottlenecks and now with added side routes you can help your team if you get around them.

All in all I think it gets 4.5 out of 5 stars from me. A little bit of housekeeping and it would be a 5. More importantly, I think it's actually better than the stocks, but keep in mind they all score a 3.5 to me [not too hard to beat].

Great Job Fuzzdad, hope to see the final soon. On a side note, do you mind the map being on other servers as b11 at this point?

We had another good playtest last night and I've made some fixes and a few gameplay changes that I'll test in the next 8 hours or so at CoJ...then if all goes well w/that test and I can get a minimap out I'll release the map...I may release the map w/o the minimap and let some enterprising mapper build one for me as well.

What it has:

1) Instant (forward) spawns on round start.
2) Spawn protection (team-specific hurts).
3) Five objectives to capture. Each teams two flag takes one to capture by enemy and two to recapture.
4) Been tested five or six times by pubbers, CAL guys, dev team members, and CoJ regulars.
5) According to others, it has stucture enough to play all classes, from tank hunter to sniper to all of them.

What it doesn't have:

1) HDR lighting
2) Specular lighting (some models and specular floors will look like crap)
3) Completness...I still do not feel overly comfortable releasing it...but even the versions that had a lot of bugs were real fun to play.

It's in the same exact place as the 88mm on the DOD 1.3 version of Falaise so I suppose if it looked out of place then it's out of place now. Most of the objectives are tanks for now because there are so few models to use....I'm hoping that I'll be able to scrounge up a few models before I call the map final in a few weeks (the map you get today is BETA).

Yea...there are a few versions around which were basically stolen by putzes who went to an open link during a playtest or two despite my request they not do so. That's OK...there's really nothing I can do about it other than to understand that some people are nothing more than disonerable butt wipes. And...since I put stuff in those versions that will eventually corrupt their hard drives it's no matter to me...

Stones, you post is a bit excecive. First, be sure that Fuzzdad was making a joke about a virus. It's frustating when you work hard on a map, you try to test it whithout the map being leaked and ppl just make it public after aggreeing to not release it when they downloaded it.

Now you talk about regular map. Dod_falaise was at one point a regular map made by FuzzDad. This is a remake of that map but use a other name because Valve bought the map back then with all right to it.

Now I don't know who you are and if you can map, but the day you can make such a map, maybe I will have respect for you.

I personnally think the moron is you. You have no idea how much work goes into make a nice playable map that is optimised. Also If you think you can do better then do it, let us see your map you have made.

Nice see that news. I was playing in a server and one guy come in and said "Falaise is ready guys" , then a lot of people talking about how god are your maps, (not joke) because you need a lot of teamwork on them, . If Valve said that your maps are Unnpopular...

Valve never said that...I did based on cold, hard facts concerning servers and map counts. A vast majority of our gaming public likes easy, simple CQ-based maps. I am diometrically opposed to that from a mapping perspective so my stuff tends to be complicated, involving, detailed and nice to look at. That doesn't usually translate to a lot of players. But...that's OK because as most independent mappers, I build what I like, not what I think others will like.

BTW...I'll start a new thread for the release and one for bug reports.

A) Package a .res file with the map, should you choose to make an .exe for it.

B) If you can't do a .res for it, then please zip the files instead, so that I can see each individual file needed for the map and build the .res myself.

I have a res made for beta 12 since i got the map and he said this is the one he will release i went ahead and made the res. Of course its not ready to hsot yet cause he is adding the mini-map and that will probablly need to be added too? So if he wants i can post my res here once the time comes.

Not sure either about cap lock. Thechnicaly it should always be the same as the map name, just not sure about cap lock.

I don't think it matters since the overview showed up in game, but I changed the .res file to lowercase names for those files just in case.
