Need help with Hammer - noob!

Ok, I'm just playing around with Hammer to get an idea of how it works until the new Hammer is released for DOD:S. I've been following the tutorial found at:

http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Your_First_Half-Life_2:_Deathmatch_Room

I've gotten to the step here:

http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Applying_Textures

But I'm having a problem. At the point where it says:

In the 3D View, left-click one of the walls of the hollow room. This will select it, turning it red like in this image

the section of the room I select doesn't turn red. If I go to the next step:

Click the Apply Current Texture icon from the panel on the left side of the Hammer window.

I get this:

Any suggestions on what I'm doing wrong? I'm a total noob when it comes to mapping. This is my first time playing around with this software.

try right-clicking the object and selecting "ungroup"

I did that. I even clicked on "Edit" and looked at the "Undo" line and it indicated that I did the "ungroup" command.

heres the steps i do:

1- create a box
2- make hollow
3- ungroup
4- then select the sides i want to texture

Maybe try starting from scratch again might work...

in your screenshot, the camera icon is selected
to select anything in the 3D view the selection tool (the arrow icon at the top) should be tool in use ;)

Thanks for the replies guys. I've gotten through the tut on making a room. Can anyone point me to a good tut, similar to the one I was following, that goes into creating a whole map in detail?

fuzzdad is now recording his every move while mapping, but the video is 3 months long.

seriously tho, your best bet is to come up with an idea, then start sketching it out on paper to get a general idea of what you want to do. once you do that, start building sections of it. you will get to points where you want to accomplish something but don't know how. THEN you can post screenshots and ask specific questions.

you could also just read misc tutorials and sometimes that will give you ideas as well.
