I've seen a custom DoD:S map with a minimap (overview), just wondering how this is done in source?
Any links or help would be appreciated

Nice. I will have a stab at it on a basic room map just to get the feel.

For the SDK just run steam and goto tools > SDK, the DODS sdk isn't out yet, just start with HL2dm

if you get stuck just ask, it took me ages to get it into my map as I had no idea what I was doing and kept getting loads of errprs but I figured it out and it's really simple so im pretty sure I can explain it in easy terms :D

1. Start the game. Click Options and switch to the Video tab. Change Resolution to "1280x1024" pixels and the Aspect Ratio to "Normal"
What if our video card doesnt support that resolution. WIll it work with 1024x768

Yes, it will work fine. Basically, It will make a square image 768*768. Then before export from P.S (or whatever image editor you use)scale it up to 1024*1024.
This is an excerpt from the tutorial (http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Creating_Level_Overviews) :
If you don't see the red line appear at step 9, make sure you have set cl_drawhud 1 (turn this off again before taking the screenshot though). After this, if you still can't see the line, you may want to try starting over but use 1024x768 resolution instead of 1280x1024. Set "cl_leveloverviewmarker 768".
