I figured I would do him another favor and let everyone on here know about his map. Feel free to check it on my site above. Here is the text file he included with the map:

WolfeR

It's good, but still not top quality.
It's definatly lacking detail

Sp3c-BuLLeT
10-16-2005, 02:19 PM
Neutrino it is the same map by the same author, he just added better textures and lightened up the sewers

PuXX

definatly needs snow

Private Dyin

There's no lights in the sewers or the wheelhouse. You have to use your flashlights.

I also don't like the imposed player limits. 24 players max? I haven't put it on our server yet but if he only put 24 spawn points that's bad. If its just a suggestion then ok but for 32, 40 or 64 player servers that leaves a lot of players unable to join. No one wants to sit in spec watching other people play so they just leave and go to another server.

Deeply depressed there was little or no effort to make kalt into a nice looking source map instead of a straight port.

The original kalt was better looking. And this is on source...

Sorry I was looking at dod_kalt_classic. :D The wheelhouse is still very dark.

I really don't like this map at all, it's got very little detail...no snow, very dark in places, and the ambient light is black, so models appear solid black in shadows..

I'm gonna wait on the official or a good remake by someone who knows what he is doing.

Guys I don't think it was Price's intention to 'pretty it up' w/o the SDK. But for the time being this map is very very playable and ENJOYABLE regardless of the flaws.

If the 'real' mappers had the SDK in its entirety then we would start seeing the quality coming through.

But for now, just PLAY it. It's another map in a game where maps are scarce, and this is one of the BETTER playable maps for now.

Jeesh. You are entitled to your opinion but these days some support would go farther then all the negativity.

Hate to be rude but the sdk work around that were using to make dod maps is almost as good as the offical one. Were just missing HDR which isn't a big deal yet.

There wasn't much effort put into this

well, to be nice, the guy did say he was a rookie mapper. so for a first attempt its not too bad (from the screenshots). I'm still not putting it up on our servers, but if he is interested in getting better he can certainly post more pics here and ask for help.
I don't want to bag on some guy that is making an effort to put out a nice looking product so long as he is willing to admit where it is on that good/bad scale and work to improve that.

I don't know what's wrong with me but I won't even touch Kalt with a spoon.

It's that bad.

judgin from the screenshots, and considering it only took him 3days to put together i would say it looks pretty good.

ive only made one map for CSS and it took me months to plan/build/polish and finish, but im a crazy perfectionist. I had to have all the vis stuff working as close to 100% as i could get it... being a rookie mapper myself i wanted my first creation to count.

but a 3hour compile seems insanley long for a simple kalt rebuild... i havent played it yet tho so i cant be to harsh.

did you use all the source tools to optimize the map? occluders and hint brushs etc??

Apollo
10-18-2005, 07:58 PM
3 hours for compile? My map is 10 mb and only takes about 5 minutes, no leaks. Seeing how this map is only 6mb, it seems absolutely outrageous to take 3 hours to compile.

Soiled Undergarment
10-18-2005, 08:08 PM
thats what i would imagine.... somthing in that map has been done wrong.

- maybe snap grid was off? (making every brush on a slightly different alignment)
- bad light enties maybe?

the map wont complete the compile if theres a leak tho.

use the NoDraw texture is also very helpfull.

my last full blown compile of my CSS map was done in under 20min... and its loaded with detail and props.

or his vvis is locking up and not closing for 3 hours

Why do you have all the maps as .exe? Haven't we all learned by now that it is very dumb to run exe's from untrusted websites?

Please remove the exe's of my dod_giza beta maps from your site. Only the b4 version was officialy released (as a zip) and even that is outdated now.

I can't speak for dodsourcemaps.com, but I convert all maps we host to .exe files. a lot of people don't know where to unzip the files and there is no standard for zips anyway. some include the dod folder, some don't, ect. some don't even maintain the correct directory structure. if people don't trust my .exe files, they are more than welcome to go look for the map elswhere.

that being said, its your map and you have every right to ask that it not be distributed.

The standard zip structure would be to assume you are in the mod root folder and have the bsp zipped into maps/ even if that was only that file. This is friendly to local user installs and upload and decompress commands via a webmin interfaces that most dedicated game servers use.

I agree, that is the structure that SHOULD be used, but it isn't always the case, unfortunately.

I also agree that .zip files are easier for linux server admins, but lets be honest. the average linux user can figure out how to make a .zip file on thier own, while the average windows client user MAY have trouble figuring out where to unzip it.

maybe the solution for a wide distribution site such as this would be to offer both versions?

That may be how YOU define the standard, but 50% of the other map makers don't zip their files like that. There's nothing wrong with using *.exe files. The key word you mentioned was "untrusted" websites...Most of us don't fall into that category...otherwise I wouldn't have 100s of downloads for each map on my website (all in *.exe format).

If you're paranoid (or you don't have anti-virus software), you can find another place to download them (like josh mentioned). And if you don't want your own maps in a *.exe file, then you should either include a readme file that spells out your instructions or limit the distribution of your map.

I have to admit...this is the first time I've ever heard of a map author telling people to stop distributing their map b/c it was in an *.exe file.

But it's your gift to the community...you set the rules.

I personally have no problem with my map being in a .exe format, only on the condition that a "read me" file be included with the .exe that gives the author credit.

I just downloaded an .exe map and there was no credit to the author whatsoever. I have no clue who made this map. This is an insult to the mapper, to not be credited for thier hard work.

you are assuming a readme was included with the original .zip too. as a mapper myself, I always include the readme if it exists. I've gotten maps from jedi before and they had readme's as well.

Exactly josh - if the original author includes a readme...so do I. But if there isn't one, then I haven't ever made the effort to create one.

Again - if a map author has special requests about the distribution of their map, they should either include it in their post when they release the map or they shoudl include a readme file in their original file package. Otherwise, people like me that try to help with the distribution have no idea what you want and we'll just do our best to make your map available to the public.;)

.exe is the way to go for any person that can package them properly. That includes me, josh_u[RR] and anyone else that can do it properly.

Most players want easy to install maps .... .exe is the way to go in the form of NSIS .... tbh.

If anyone can't handle a well packaged .exe ... so be it. Download any map from my webby and tell me it don't work ... I'll fix it.

NOTE: Maps on MM are packaged for a client not a server admin :D

We seem to have hijacked this thread :donrluvs: ... when I get fast download working (again) on our server ... I'll let you know what I think of this map.

Things are a little whiter like as if a little bit of snow was on the ground. The wheelhouse now has some light but it looks like the woodpiles are giving off the light. :D Also you can see little flakes of snow falling, even inside the wheelhouse.

You can call it a remake all you want but it still looks like a cheap decompile job.

exe's are nice...

but i just use BSPzip... then theres, 1 file with everything compiled into it... howmuch easier can it get? take dod_mapname.bsp and put it in your maps dir.

sounds easy enough, and you know everyone will see your map as you intend it to be seen cause some people just love to loose textures.

We've had the map running on our server for awhile and it's pretty popular, but...

...everyone's having a tough time climbing the ladders out of the sewers. It's very hard to climb them without slipping off. It seems like you need to look straight up at the sky as you move up them, or else you slide back down.

Any help on why this is, or what the best way to climb the ladders is? :(

11-07-2005, 07:10 PM
You hit the nail on the head...you have to look straight up.

It's just a map glitch, like snowing on the insides of buildings. It's not a great aesthetic map, but until more are released, I'll take it.

It's still fun to play.
