Converting old versions

How difficult is it to convert the maps from 1.3 to source? Can they be directly imported into the newer game/recompiled and be playable?
The reason I'm asking is I know many of you have older 1.3 maps you've already made, any way to do put out some "quick" maps so we can play old version on the new engine while we wait for the release of the SDK/FGD or w/e.

Uh. The straight and quick answer? Yes (afaik, anyway). The only problem would be textures. The entire map would have to be retextured.
The long answer? Preferably not!

I'd definatly be willing to retexture a good ol map like kalt, probably mess with some displacement too o.O
How do you port them in?

You would need the original RMF/MAP file to do it properly.

But if you really wanna be an :crown::crown::crown: and have the respected portion of the mapping world frown upon you, you could just rip it.

Lol, I think I'll pass, the skinning community already hates me for my, less than normal works..don't want that from my lovely mapping community :O

How long would it take you to redo the textures on a map you imported? Seem like we could get a few 1.3 customs out so everyone had something decent to play until the real "new" customs could be completed.
Would be nice to have something other then the four current maps and some of the iceworld dm style "customs" people are putting out now.
dod_old_maps would be great to play.

You have to retexture and resize every single texture on every single face. Then once thats done strip all the entities out and redo them all. You could leave some in but I always ran into troubles doing that, it may have been cleared up more now.
So you can do, it just takes a long time and they maps look hugely out of date and clunky.

Ok, I understand it now. From the first response I recieved I gathered it was just a texture issue. If you have to redo all of your other work other then the brushes it would be a long process.

You can leave the brush work as it is, Ginger Lord is just suggesting it will look outdated compared to the DoD:S maps we currently have if all you do is re-texture an old map.
Not to start an argument but most players won't notice anyway, the detail of most DoD:S custom maps is very low at the moment but a lot of players love playing them.
I converted an old map of mine from 1.3 to CS:S sometime ago and all I did was re-texture it and put CS:S entities in, we played it a bit on our own CS:S server. I mentioned I wanted to update it as it was crap and most players thought I'd finished it and wondered why I was going to update it
So if you do have an old RMF you want to convert why not give it a go and see?
One problem with the brushes might be the size of them, I've updated all of my old 1.3 maps recently, one reason for doing this was to resize all the buildings (brushes) so that converting to DoD:S will be a bit easier.
You can always add detail as get better at Source mapping and maybe by then you could rebuild the map from scratch to get the map just the way it should be for DoD:S :vader:
