Ground Normal Maps

Ok, I just started on normal maping the floors, and they don't seem to be working. I did the whole 'nature' folder, which is mostly Flash, and I can't tell any difference at all in the map. I also did all of the concrete folder, and those are doing something really wierd. When you first look at em, they've got these black stripes. When I fire near them, they do the HDR thing, but instead of going back to normal, they stay lit up. I have no idea what the problem is here, if anyone has any ideas i sure would appreciate it.

Couple screens of my problem:

And normal maping the floors makes them bumpy and realistic. Take a look at my releases.

Alright, Jake's stumped.

Crates, doors, interiors, vehicles, and exteriors don't work either. This wouldn't be frustrating if fortififications didn't work. Why do those and not the rest of them?

You do realise creating normal maps for everthing is going to seriously abuse your graphic cards memory and bandwidth?

I'm not saying what you've done is bad but your putting some serious strain on systems that use them.

Probably best to warn people not to use them if they have less that a 6800Ultra with 512Mb RAM :D

Agreed. Adding normal maps to every texture would be awesome, but for SLI guys.

Well... At last not me, who has 9800 Pro and avg 25 - 35 FPS :S

No, I know what normal mapping is and does, I was just wondering if it was worth it. I mean, I dont spend a lot of time looking at the ground. I've seen your other releases and they look good, but I'm just wondering if the result is worth the performance hit.

Thanks for the garand.

I doubt it will affect any map unless they used the custom normal mapped texture, only models and such will.

If a map is made with the normal mapped texture, then it would show..

Doom3 seems to have bump maps for everything from walls and floors to models and it runs great on my X800 Pro 256mb..

Mappers assign a VMT texture to a wall the same as modellers assign a VMT texture to a model. They just use the file name - if you alter the contents of the file to point to an additional normal map it will use it just find without any modifications.

Yes, yes, they have a performance hit if you have a lot of them. That's pretty damn obvious. Of course, you all seem to be ignoring everything I've said here because with the exception of the sandbags and dragon's teeth I can't get a single mapmodel or prop to take them. Kind of moot what kind of FPS hit you'll take if they don't work, eh?

Keep in mind that X800 isn't 9800 :P

All right, my frustration and lack of sleep must have gotten to me last night, My folders were in the wrong place. Let me try this again before I get all mad again. Sorry for snapping :)

And Jed, thanks for the lecture on the completely obvious. I could have used some help instead, though.

edit: Just to be clear, the map models like the tank, doors, exteriors, those are working. Still no luck with the ground, bricks, etc.
