Enhanced Realism 3rd Infantry Division, 15th Reg., K Co. Infantry Skins
===================================

http://img360.imageshack.us/img360/7551/collage0qk.jpg

Since the Day of Defeat team graciously decided to use our very own division for the default US infantry unit (the 3rd Infantry Division), I'm releasing my very own realism overhaul skin to live up to our 3rd ID standard of realism.

These skins have been looked over with a fine toothed comb through the eye of a WWII reenactor. They are the most historically accurate and realistic US Infantry skins released to date for DoD:S. I decided against adding an infantry division patch, as it would be on both sleeves and backwards on one of them. Version 2.0 of the skins will see even more improvement.

Some enhancements include...

http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/9527/gear5wx.jpg

http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/9195/boots1sm.jpg

http://img393.imageshack.us/img393/6108/jacket3gw.jpg

http://img373.imageshack.us/img373/6640/holster5qo.jpg

Uniform:
- Realistic uniform color adjustment (Jacket, pants, helmet).
- Realistic M41 jacket modifications (Added buttons in all correct places, added proper slit pockets, proper back tightening tabs with buttons)
- Realistic sandpaper helmet texture, helmet net, and the 3rd ID has been fixed (Not backwards).
- Realistic leggings/boot modifications. (Proper boot soles, legging straps, and added captoed service shoes with laces skin)
- Private First Class Chevrons.
- Added dirt/battleworn grime to uniform, gear and skin.
- Small bloody headwound when helmet is blown off.

Gear:
- Added proper "U.S." markings to all field gear pieces.
- Proper bandoleer color and markings.
- OD Green paint scheme for t-handle shovel.
- Added detail to the Colt .45 handle in holster.
- Custom 15th Regiment, K Company ID stencil on pack.
- BAR magazines are now seen in the pouches.
- Flap added to the M1928 Haversack.

And more, including realisim enhancing normal maps! You really have to download them to get the full effect...

Hope you enjoy the skins! Rock of the Marne!

Thank you very much! Feel free to add them to your downloads page, by all means. :)

By the way, do the normal maps work? I can't run normal maps on my system and I wanted to release them ASAP so I never found out whether or not they're actually working.

wow... :eek:

The legends from MSA are slowly creeping back! I remembered back in the days i was using the 3rd ID pack for dod classic... :)

Do all the various classes have ranks on them too?

Captain Higgins

I wish they did, but the single sleeve texture on the default models won't even allow me to add a 3rd ID patch on only one arm. Hopefully in the next version.

Engineer
10-05-2005, 02:42 AM
You would have to re-map both upper arms in order to do that.

they're definately not on the default player models, or V_ and W_ models, that much I know.

ok heres a heads-up.

I think i just saw the effect in anzio. Allies spawn>rightmost exit where your allies pass into the small house, under the light the uniform lighting is very pleasing.

Hard to describe, but i think that was the effect.

All you do to enable a normal map is to put the normal map .vtf file and the new .vmt file in the same folder as the regular skin .vtf

So you would end up with 3 files for every skin with normal mapping:
- texture.vtf
- texture_normal.vtf
- texture.vmt

The texture .vmt originaly looks like this (for the v_hand.vtf):
"VertexLitGeneric"
{
"$baseTexture" "models\weapons\v_models\hands\v_hand"

}

This is modified to tell the engine where the normal map is (c/o Dillinger):
"VertexLitGeneric"
{
"$baseTexture" "models\weapons\v_models\hands\v_hand"
"$bumpmap" "models\weapons\v_models\hands\v_hand_normal"

}

Don't worry though, every normal map released should come with a new .vmt so you don't have to do this, I just wanted to go into some detail so everyone would understand what's going on with the different file types. I still don't understand exactly what's going on with these things, I still once in a while get wierd checkerboard textures for some reason I can't figure out, but that the basic gist of it.

edit: Just wanted to say as well for anyone that's having trouble seeing the difference, that Higgin's normal map is a very subtle one. It doesn't stand out quite as much as Jed's map for the default allies. Definately there, though, if you followed his installation instructions.

Looks great, ingame as well. I love them.
I wanted to ask one thing though. Why are all ranked as pfc? It could be nice to see the assault class as ssg or something :)

Thanks !

Only one skin for each nation in Source. Can't do all that class-specific stuff like in the original. Shame, really.

Yeah, this is something I want to correct for version 2.0 of these skins. This was the line in my original post explaining:

I decided against adding an infantry division patch, as it would be on both sleeves and incorrectly backwards on one of them. Version 2.0 of the skins will see even more improvement.

The PFC stripe was added because I thought a rank insignia would look better than no rank insignia, and it would be more common to see a large group of PFCs than making an entire team of corporals or sergeants - for example.

Thank you for your compliments, everyone! I appreciate it very much. Also, thank you for checking up on the normal maps. I'm going to work on those a bit more for version 2.0.

Edit: Oh yes! I forgot to mention that I also skinned the inside of the M1 helmet to give it a proper issue helmet liner, when in gets blown off! I'll add a picture to the first post. :)

Sorry I forgot to read this when I pmed you. I think they look good with the pfc insignia then all without. Source does need to fix that bad.

It looks like I'm going to be using Wile E. Coyote's high resolution skins as a base point for the Axis version.

I've been busy lately, but you'll know just as soon as they're ready.
