Im having a problem with custom textures ive tryed evry thing but wont work i convert tga to vmt or wat eva it is and when i load it in hammer its a big purple and black checker thing can someone help me.......
if its easyer ill send u the pics to b converted and u can do em...

I converted a lightsaber model over to Source once, and got the same thing.. Double check to make sure all your model, and material paths are correct.. My mistake was that the material was one directory off..

for a texture to work you need both the vmt and vtf files, i forget which of the 2 but its a text file that stores directory information ~ check some out and you will see whut i mean

vtf is the texture, vmt is the info belonging to the texture, both of them form the "material"
In your vmt, you need to specify the folder in which the texture is located, and the name it should have. Make sure you do this and it should work fine, I've many custom textures that work just fine.

I have done a few textures and overlays and work just fine. But textures, now called materials are a little more complex. You need to specify a few parameter like wood when specified as a wood material, if you walk on it it will sound like wood. A good tutorial on how to make texture:
