Do you need HL2 to map for source, or just the game you're mapping for?

Just the game you're mapping for. But you won't have HL2 textures/models to play with in your maps, which arguably can very well be used in a WWII setting

The Building_Templates in the texutres are extremely helpful and very dod like. I suggest you get HL2.

I'm pretty sure both DoD:S and CS:S uses HL2 textures/models. If you remember the DoD:S preloading, most people started at 85%, meaning they had most of the content already (which I assume is the entire HL2 texture and model library)

yes and no Insta, because neither the beta gcf nor the final release gcf contain ALL textures and models. In certain cases yeah it's true, you end up having the same model twice (CSS bananas/oranges come to mind)
