Community made zoo.vmf

Sly Assassin

I've been thinking lately that we should put a big zoo.vmf together for dod source.

By this I mean people contribute for instance a bunker they made in their map, this mentioned bunker would then be added to the zoo.vmf along with anything else thats been 'donated'.

Waldo and Fuzzdad both released zoo.map or rmf's can't remember the exact file type for the old dod which had things such as clipped models and the little bridge out of gilder.

I think as a community we could pull this off and make mapping for source alot easier for everyone i general. I know alot of people who make their own zoo files and find it easier to copy paste the already made building into their new map instead of just starting it from the ground up again.

Things we could include in the zoo.vmf are

Houses, both normal and destroyed
Bunkers, trenches
Brush based fences
Entity setups for things like elevators that go more then one level up/down
Stairwells
Rubble piles that aren't model based

Thats just a small list of things we could add, I'd love to see this kick off and I'm more then happy to make everyones 'donation' into one zoo.vmf instead of heaps.
It'll be a regular update aswell

Ideas?

Heres my first 'donation' a casemate for a 155mm coastal artillery piece.

Also I've added Wt's house to the vmf with my casemate linked below.

But for now we're making a dam good start and thats what I like to see, people pulling together for the general good of the community :)

Keep up the good work and keep it rolling in so I can continually update the zoo :)

Didn't plan to show this to anyone, cause it's of pretty bad quality. But as far as i checked the preload gfc file, there is no Flak 18 - 88mm AA in the initial release. So this one I modelled to get into XSI might be helpful as a placeholder til the dev team or some good modeller releases something better. Especially the texturing sucks, but that's something i don't have the time for at the moment and it's not worth it.

@Ranson, holy heck bro, looks dam nice :) I'll be sur to use that in my map somewhere looks fantastic. You might aswell link the ME 109 aswell you never know when something like that could come in handy. Question is it animated for flying? Could be useful as a beach strafing plane etc :)

This looks so tasty. Would it be possible to make it swivel on the x and z axis? The HL1 flak cannons annoyed me so much because they were aimed way to damn low. Usless in a city.
Ill provide something once I start DoD:S mapping.

That's a very cool looking 88mm you made there. At least from what we can see right now.

I have an 88mm in my axis spawn, which is the old HL1 model, so this one will definitely be tried :)

So you can swivel it in Hammer? I don't know if thats possible.
I could compile different rotations tho.

Well, as I said, the texture is very undetailed. The HL1 flak has a better texture with a lot of details drawn onto it. Maybe I'll find the time to improve the texture one day. But as I said I expect someone else or the dev team to release something better anyway.

Not animated yet, but if i remove the landing gears, it would work well for a flyby animation.
So what would I have to do, make the rotor rotate and put in some swaying? Rest would be up to path_track in Hammer, right?

Again the texture is a major downside. :(
The envmap for reflections can be enabled in the vmt file.

Twigee

Moving the gear up and making the prop turn at say 180 degrees per frame would work, thats 900 RPM which is a low idle for a plane but its enough that you wont be able to tell the difference.

Might get away with a bit slower but I'm not sure.

I think he meant ingame like animated possibly?

As for the ME 109 just having the rotor rotate would be more then enough in the way of animation :) The plane looks pretty good ingame from those screenies, plus if it was moving you wouldn't be able to see any problems with the texture at all. The flak 18 texture looks pretty good anyway, better the the hl1 one.

just finished with this a few minutes ago, it's a copy of a flak emplacement from pointe du hoc. the wall around the edge should actually be a concrete tunnel with small ammo stores inside for the shells, but it shouldn't be too hard to add those, if you need them (the ammo stores were just like small cupboards cut into the walls for holding shells).

this is obviously made for Ranson's flak model, if any official ones are ever made it'd be easy enough to just resize the metal frame to fit.
i'll post my 150mm model in here once it's done aswell. i haven't had any replies here or at another forum to skin it, so i'm trying to do it myself. my skinning skills end at dodge/burn, so it may not turn out that well. if i ever fix my spitfire model, i'll post that aswell.

Yeah looking good fellas, really good. This is a great idea, and I see Watchtower is also making some textures as well, and those are looking great too. It's nice to see the community so eager to share, even before source is really out. Perhaps we should establish a file structure for dod source mapping that we can also share, that way we ensure that for content that isn't zipped into the bsp maps will share a common structure perhaps lessening download times for custom content?

this is how a community needs t be, pulling together to help one and all out. Also isn't this what you started a thread about ages ago? ie all work toward having the same unit sizes for things like walls, windows, doors etc etc to get some consistentcy among mappers?
Maybe we could work on that aswell :)

@Prop, good idea about having a consistent naming routine for models, also we could use that for materials and sounds etc.

it could be something like models/custom/vehicles/nameofmodler etc etc that would keep it simple from a file hunting point of veiw :)

Watchtower

ehhh.... lets just leave it how it is.

I put all my custom models as

"models\watchtower"

And my textures

"materials\custom\watchtower"

to avoid crowding up the actual materials main dir.

As far as releases, lets make a model release thread and release them there. Lets keep this thread to the point, adding brushwork for downloads. Ive provided all the hosting that will be neccessary.

You post, Sly uploads to my ftp the new .zip file containing all previous releases.

TheSurgeon

i keep all mine in the same place aswell, models in models/surgeon and textures in materials/surgeon. aslong as everyone keeps them in the same place, people shouldn't have to re-download them every time they connect to a map using those models. if they were all released together as some model/prefab pack though, then it'd make sense to group them all together.

The old ones were compiled for CSS. Actually that shouldn't be a problem, as far as I know there is no game specific data written into the model files. Neat stuff in here guys.

I'm really happy to see people sharing things rather than "hording" them. It's sort of the "open source" approach almost, where by sharing, we make everyone (and the game) better.

I've been working on a little bunker zoo lately - different from the other ones I've seen. I'll toss it up when I'm done.

Again, I really like seeing people share their work here - and not getting too caught up in holding all their "secrets".

Yer i'm also glad people are helping out with this, its great to see people come together for the general good of the community and share things :)

Can't wait to see what you've put in your zoo file :)

I have cleaned the model up a bit, its quite complex, so rather large.

http://82.17.3.86/maps/hotel.zip

The bsp is included, so if anyone wants to test the building, please do.. I already know of a strange issue where a crate blown up on the first floor will cast shadows down the groundfloor walls.

I have also left the roof accessible so that snipers etc can get to the roof..

I will try a few barns next. is anyone using this stuff to make maps yet??

the textures arent properly lined up, so the users will just have to realign them, if they plan on using the same texture.

Hello...

Is the above file the updated one? the content looks the same as the old one you posted.

Sorry if some of the textures etc are a bit odd, these are only meant as a guideline, as are the props.

here is a rough wood shed with timber frame and truss work.

here's a couple of versions of a brick bridge (single and double arch)

http://www.swannexa.fsnet.co.uk/stuff/bridgezoo.zip

modify them to fit if you have any use for them :)

http://www.swannexa.fsnet.co.uk/stuff/bridge2.jpg

no carving was used in the making of this bridge ;)

this is obviously made for Ranson's flak model, if any official ones are ever made it'd be easy enough to just resize the metal frame to fit.
i'll post my 150mm model in here once it's done aswell. i haven't had any replies here or at another forum to skin it, so i'm trying to do it myself. my skinning skills end at dodge/burn, so it may not turn out that well. if i ever fix my spitfire model, i'll post that aswell.

You better pm TheSurgeon. If he doesn't reply and it's not in the Zoo you'll prolly have to build it yourself ;)

I dont like using things other than models from the zoo. I like to be original and so should YOU! Unlees you are a beginner and veen then, use them sparingly.

i don't have that prefab anymore, i made a huge flak emplacement from that one small hexagonal wall which is now an objective in my dogsector map. i might see if i can separate just that one part if i have the time, otherwise you'll have to see if anyone else still has the original .vmf
