do yourself a favor and learn to map on source, most of us hear started with hl1 mapping which is why it wasnt hard to learn new features but your getting yourself into a world of pain learning for hl1 first...dod:s is almost here as it is so pickup the source sdk and give it a go - theres a whole world of tutorials out there to help you.
google is your friend.

That's the Source Dedicated Server not Source SDK.
You need the Silver or Gold Package to get access to the SDK.
Like travis said, you might as well go to source now if you can.

If its source mapping your interested in, this is a good place to start from. It might not have every tutorial listed but its got links to most all the sites that put tutorials up for people.

until dods is actually released you have to make source maps for CS, then convert them over to dod when the time comes.

its actually looking for gameinfo.txt . there isn't one for dod:s yet. you have to map for CS:S. if you are still getting that error, do a search for gameinfo.txt in this forum and you will find a fix for the problem.

If your mapping with cs:s or hl2 the gameinfo.txt will appear in the correct place after you launch the game once.
so if cs:s mapping, launch cs:s then quit then the gameinfo.txt will be there.

The first bit of learning the editor and just feeling like you have no idea what you are doing is the worst! Stick with video tutorials until you get used to the editor and the different tools. Here's a starter tutorial on building your first room. I did'nt download it but you can probably find better video tuts somewhere else. HL2files isnt really a modding site im kinda surprised its on there.

The video from the link is doing stuff that I cant do like when he went from making the room to the picture tool so he can see the outside of it.When I click on the picture tool after making my room and click the left top corner screen the box (the room) dissapears.

These are the pics of what it looked like at first and then once I clicked on the camera tool. But once I click back on the Block Tool the box comes back.I just need to learn how to view the outside of it.

When you draw your brush with the brush tool (grey square) you need to right click inside it and click 'create object'.
Like this (http://img99.imageshack.us/my.php?image=untitled7ra1.jpg)
If you havn't 'created' it, then it will look as if it has dissapeared when you click on the camera tool.
