Hammer 4.0, small differences

Hey there all, the other day I got the Source:SDK and life was good. Lots of content and programs for all. I started using Hammer and running test maps to have fun with the newness. But I've noticed there are quite a few small differences from 3.5 to 4.0 that are quite annoying. I'll list them for easy referece :kitty:

- Vertex tool: edges hidden by brush do not show. 3.5 showed these which helped find clipping booboos.
- Selection tool: Often in 3.5 I tried to select a corner with the vertex tool or selct a brush with the select tool and accedently made a box which did not select anything. This was remedied by hitting the enter key. 4.0 seems to require a severe enter key hammering and lots of tool switching.
- Cloning: 3.5: A smiple hold Shift and drag operation, but I use the arrow keys to shift as the destination is often far away. But in 4.0 it only drags the box surrounding the object if only the arrow keys are used, then the box is impossible to get rid of.
- Vertices stay: After vertex editing and selecting another object the vertices stay on the 3D screen.
- More unstable: a few quick short-cut keys used and it jams up and crashes.

Theres a few more just little things that could be easily remedied. Now don't take me wrong, I love Hammer, and 4.0 is so awsome, there are a lot of little extras, like the cloning path_track auto-naming thing. But it'd be cool if VAVLE just fixed these little things.

:sheep:

For the selection tool. Quite often I don't select anything (even though imho I 'hit' the box. Perhaps we should complain about Hammer hit reg :) ).

Try using escape to get rid of the highlight box. Works better for me...

For the shift drag, that's really rather annoying. Tho it works, if you move it a tiny bit with the mouse after using the arrow keys.

It didn't crash on me yet *crosses fingers* :p

I agree with the more unstable comments, though you should have seen it back in last winter, when there was a memory leak which meant you were bound to crash (blue screen on top of that) at one point.

I don't agree with the selection tool argument, yes of course it's still there, but hitting enter once has always worked for me. Maybe it's your keyboard that's getting old?

There is another bug you haven't mentioned that keeps appearing after a certain amount of time (and therefore of memory used) which is that your brush based entities stop showing as entities (once selected) but back to normal brushes. You can't edit their properties obviously

You feel like you need to reselect those and turn them again into entities. But it won't help as they still are entities, and the bug stays

The quick easy way of returning to a normal state is just to save the map, close hammer and launch it again, everything will be back as it was before.

Heh, have you ever tried turning off Ignore groups? Its the little "ig" button up the top. I'm not sure what the shortcut key is but I keep hitting it. That thing messed up my old map many times, I thought it was killing my ents :p

Oh I hate that, when you try to move something really small or miss a brush and you end up drawing that blue box. Happens to me hundreds of times each time I use hammer :(. The vertex one is worse though coz you can't undo/redo out of it.
*EDIT*
yea another thing that pisses me off is when you try to clip something with a small grid (and zoomed in). It always seems to decide to clip a few lines off where you tell it too.

Yeah I thought about ignore groups, the thing is I hardly ever use shortcuts (except a few key ones, ctrl t for example)....Oh well I still took the habit of closing Hammer and opening it back up every now and then so I'm sure the memory leak problem won't crop up again....

anyone figured out how to clip a 16 sided sphere into 1/4's? Everytime I try it hammer crashes >_<

Never even tried, and I wonder what you'd be using that for, instead of having a custom model for half the resource strain
