[WIP] DoD:S Axis models

I started making this model yesterday to get some good practice at player modelling, rigging and skinning. I'll be making a whole set of skins - grenadier, sniper etc, so far though I just have the basic model. I'll make some with rolled up sleeves, gaiters/jackboots, different gear etc. It's just under 3000 tris at the moment, with the hands and head copied from a BiA model for now (I'll be using a head model from DoD:S anyway).
It's just a standard Waffen SS uniform right now, but I'm not sure whether I should model the shoulder straps or just skin them.
Still needs some work anyway before I start making the variations, a lot of the details though I'll probably add with a normal map.

Here's some renders:

And aswell as the hundreds of pictures I have saved that I'm using as reference, I'm using a lot of stuff from this site:

Looking good. Make sure their elbows don't stick out too much though, you'll get crucified for that

Oh man, I can't wait for this one! Do you have any idea on when you might release it?!

TheSurgeon

Some time after DoD:S is released, obviously. But I don't know how long, it didn't take me long to model it all, I've just spent hours tweaking it and moving verts around. I also have never rigged a character before, so I don't know how long that will take. I've got nothing else to do for a while though so the modelling and texturing shouldn't take too long.

Made it yesterday? Wow.. looks good, nice job Surgeon. A ltitle suggestion, make the helmet a little bit larger yeah?

and do some work on the rim too.

I never made the helmet, that's also from BiA. The whole head and helmet are from an allied paratrooper model, the only one that came with the BiA SDK. I will make one eventually but I'm getting on with the other stuff first.

Not much done today anyway, I tried making a version with rolled up sleeves, which still needs some work. The arms I made also look too thin so they need fixing. The third one in this render is the sniper, wearing a plain wool tunic and scarf. That model is actually based on this (http://img190.imageshack.us/img190/6320/12thsspow7oy.jpg) photo. He most likely isn't a sniper but I thought it'd make a good sniper skin.
I've spent most of the time uvmapping anyway, which hasn't been too hard. I'm going to make a couple more variations and then try to make some skins.

Here's a render of all 3 anyway (you should probably ignore the face for now):

Try some Waffen SS instead.........

What is it about those Werhmacht uniforms that are just so freaking boring???

The pea-dot camo of the SS is much cooler

TheSurgeon

They are Waffen SS. They're all wearing Waffen SS smocks apart from the sniper who's just in a plain wool tunic, which is why there's no details on the front of the others. I'll add all the creases with a normal map so they wont look so plain. Here's one of the photos I'm using as a reference:
http://img70.imageshack.us/img70/3365/waffenss25cl.jpg

I've worked on them more anyway, just editing stuff and fixing the uvmaps. I'll try and start skinning them soon but I'm not sure whether to model the gear or wait and see what the dod:s skins come with.

Grenadier (http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/9750/waffengrenadier9gq.jpg)
Unterofficer (http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/3413/unterofficer2fs.jpg)
Sturmtruppen (http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/2631/waffenstg0wm.jpg)
Sniper (http://img168.imageshack.us/img168/8366/waffensniper5mr.jpg)
MG/Pschreck (http://img168.imageshack.us/img168/6712/waffenmg9yv.jpg)

They're not finished, and I could probably do with making the smocks look looser but that's all I've done for now.

Have you ever modeled before?

TheSurgeon
07-27-2005, 06:16 PM
Yes. Mostly low poly static models for a couple of games. Never modelled a game character before, and the only human models I've ever made have been very high poly.

wow! Great job!

I wish I knew how to model.

Looks like you are going to be a valuable asset to the DOD:S mod community.

Thanks for sharing your work!

Take care

Would you say it has a big learning curve, or is it fairly easy to pick up?

TheSurgeon
07-28-2005, 04:18 PM
Certain programs are easier than others, but overall it's not that hard. Like with any program you learn more tricks and shortcuts that make it easier but overall it isn't too hard.

Right on, thanks, and they're looking good. I hope they get finished. (Skinned)

Just a small update with some renders of the equipment I've got done today. I spent a couple of hours modelling and uvmapping a couple of things. All I've got left to model of the gear for now is a holster, stg pouches, redo the kar pouches (which'll do for K43 ones aswell), an mg42 barrel case and maybe an ammo case for the MG aswell. I'll also make an m42 cap (http://www.1944militaria.com/m41oakbsp.jpg) that I'll probably use on the sniper, and have plain/covered helmets for the rest.

Here's some renders anyway, with all the gear I've finished so far.

that is spectacular dude! may i ask what first got you into modelling/where you started? (i have wanted to do it for a while now and have the tools to do so but just cannot figure it out for the life of me, its much harder then PS ever was, and ive been trying for a little over a year now. :()

I started with milkshape, just extruding polygons and making loads of block shaped things. Then I got 3dsmax which was a lot easier and like with my mapping, I just practiced, making random things (like my PC) and reading a lot of tutorials (www.3dtotal.com is the best place I've found). Once you get used to it and learn all the tools/shortcuts it does become a lot easier, but for me it is still hard just trying to imagine a real object in 3D and figuring out how you create a wireframe for it. Seeing other peoples' work (like on the 3dtotal forums) helps with that though, especially with organic models like humans.

stick with it bro, its very difficult but can be rewarding.

Keep it up dude, your progressing quite a bit.

been a couple of months since i did anything with these, but i finally found a decent, high-res photo of a waffen ss smock last night, so i made the base skin for the smock in PSP earlier today. i spent a few minutes coming up with a couple of variations, changing the hue/saturation, and i've got these 4. i'm not sure which one to use though, or whether to mix them up. i'll probably end up using the first two, but i just wanted to know what other people thought.

here's the render anyway, this is the mg/pschrek skin with all his gear:

They all look good except for that dark grayish one.

I'd say the best would be the last one and the first one.

Great job man! :)

The back of the helmet looks rather odd.

Cant wait to see the possibilities now that DOD is using the source engine, the custom models are going to look fabulous!

All of them look nice. But i agree on the gray one. Can't think of a reference, where they had a gray camouflage.

A combination of the first and the last one would be my personal preference. Something like that: http://www.missing-lynx.com/gallery/figures/waffenssschutze_metcalfe5.jpg

Keep it up.

I disagree with you guys. I think the third one from the left looks the best. The others seem a bit too bright to me. I think that one looks the most like the link below.

agreed,

i think the dark one looks the best

I think if the pattern on the dark one was mixed with one of the others, it would come out a bit more balanced. BUt yeah the camo's could be a bit darker, although some of the SS camo smocks were quite bright, like the autumn leaf camo.
Some good examples here: http://www.marketgarden.com/new/gear/gear9.htm
