Hello again. Today I present to you what will most likely be the final preview in a long series of previews of my map. I've been busy adding 1.0 features like bushes, trees, tanks, you name it. Kleinluka has been working hard on textures for me, and they look great.

Objectives:
Americans (NO, I'm not making the map British.)
-Blow up the Jagdpanther at the field
-Blow up the Tiger at the Axis Barn
-Cut the telephone wires at the Axis Barn

Germans:
-By stealing satchels (none have been provided at the spawn), destroy both bridges. Satchels can be found at the crashed jeep in the village or in the Resistance hideout under the Allied Barn.

Andy, I hope you will include a nice 1.0-quality mini-map/overview. iNw's dod_bridge did not come with one, which was a shame. Not all customs come with overviews, but I've come to treat invasionworks custom maps as pseudo-official, so I guess that's why I'm expecting a nice "artsy" overview like the official maps have.

dod_campagne is looking beautiful, as usual. Gimme gimme gimme!

Well, Andy, you know what I think of your map, and I'm more impressed than ever! :D

There are some road signs :) You just don't see them in any of the screenshots.

I've decided to give a more detailed overview of the map for those of you that don't know much about it.

Gameplay - I've had two successful playtests courtesy of DoDMaps (www.dodmaps.com) and they went well. The objectives for the Germans were confusing at first but once they learned the map seemed to be fairly balanced. Now, with the addition of the overview system (and a lot of helper text :)) the map should be pretty easy to understand.

Layout - linear...but not linear. There are two main road, that split from each spawn and have several paths in between. And of course there's the river in the middle of the map which I suppose could be considered another path.

Neat stuff - The Allies have their plane that they can call in - it drops a bomb near the Jagdpanther. The Germans have a mortar near the Jagdpanther. The mortar gets blown up in the explosion from the bombing :)
Plenty of things you can blow up with rocket launchers...walls...roof gables...windows...church tower...animals of the bovine variety...

If there are any other questions, ask away, the only exception being "When are you releasing it???"

My suggestions are as follows, from what I see in that screenshot... The atmosphere is outstanding as it is. You've nailed the feel of a small bocage village. I would change the car in front of the barn to a horse cart, like the model found with dod_bridge2, because it makes more sense to have it by the barn.

Secondly, I'd throw some grass models sticking out of the water under the bridge to give it a little more visual drama. Any sort of foliage on those sloping hills, or sprouting out fot he water would be a great idea.

Third and last are the tiny details. Make sure every texture has the right "hit" sound... Nothing more irritating than shooting at a Tiger tank, and watching rock debris fall off it. If you want me to run around the map and do it myself, I will. Other little details are things like the German hat resting on a table in DoD_Chemille... Making maps interactive and immersive like that give it great atmosphere, and nice extra touches. You've already done the mortar and plane... Don't stop there, give it some more things to interact with.

Maybe drop a pickupable MP40 and a helmet on a table somewhere. An old radio in a house that you can select, and it plays some music. Some light switches that can be turned off and on to give people ambushing a chance to hide. Hell, make the bridge require TWO satchels to blow - which makes them use teamwork.

Make it unique. I'd love to test the map, if possible.

Andy this isn't the map that you released a video of a while ago right? With a plane flying by and dropping a bomb and blowing holes in the map?

If so, very nice.

05-20-2003, 04:26 PM
Faceman, if I remember correctly, the video showed only the ground being blown up, in Campagne the front side of a house and the ground are struck.

Higgins: The sounds are all correct, I remember in the first playtest being amazed by even shooting the street signs made a metallic sound, even before all the 1.0 stuff came out.

The map has great gameplay, fantastic. It's just a great map. :D

Cpt. Higgins: I think you'll find that I am a "details" man :) I do indeed have quite a few small things like you mentioned - the screenshots just don't happen to show them :) I really like the idea about lights though...I'll look into it.

I most certainly intend to have the textures properly assigned. I also agree about the cart - I'll have to find that model and put it in there.
I'll definitely try and "spruce up" the river area a bit with foliage. Problem is, I don't want to have too many entities, as the map uses quite a bit as it is.

I'm still in the process of finalizing all of the small details like that.

As for the bridges possibly requiring two satchels, I originally had it like that but found it made it way too hard for the Germans to win. You see, they have to go almost all the way across the map to steal satchels, and go back to the bridges, which are in the middle of the map, and then place them. Also, it takes about five seconds to place the satchel charge, like it was in para_glider and the 88's back in 3.1. And of course, there are two bridges to destroy. The Germans have Panzerschrecks but they cannot use them to blow up the bridges...for obvious reasons (it would be kind of silly...)

Faceman: Indeed, this is the same map that I showed a long time ago.

Whoopy: The bomb only makes a crater now...I didn't want the Allies to have access to that house because it's the alternate exit from the Axis spawn.

Ah, I see... so whats the alternate from the allied spawn then?

Indeed, this is my first unveiled-to-the-public map. My previous efforts were...interesting but not worthy of being shown.

The map is finished, kleineh is working hard on some textures (/me pets klein) and IR is working on a few models.

I've submitted the map to the DoD team. So, we shall see what happens.
