It's a picture of my new map, the Allies has to take the city, and the axis has to defend it.

The Allies begin in a C47, and they jump ^^ ! They will be teleport somewhere in saint mere eglise and they have to take many objectifes as a canon88, the famous church, cimetery, and a bridge.

Lovely name...

But I would Seriously consider renaming it. Players have a hard enough time playing DOD let-alone trying to remember how to spell and hyphenate a maps name correctly. Specially on servers that allow map voting, GREAT maps don't get played because people don't know how to spell heautu (how ever that is spelled). They have a difficult enough time trying to spell falaise and dod_snowcity_b4_2_ver9 (not real, just stressing what I am trying to say).

Its fine for servers that don't allow map voting and just run a regular rotation, but most servers that I play on (not that it matters) allow you to type a maps name in chat to put it up for voting for the next map change.

Just a suggestion Sir !

I guess Driven always names his maps "drv_" to "sign" them. I do agree with the name change suggestion, even if that map is just for that contest you're entering Driven, people WILL have a hard time.

Looks pretty nice from what I can see...

I agree with everybody else about the name... however, people who like the map tend to remember the name over time the more often it's played. But for the moment... maybe shorten it to something like:

dod_stmere?
just a sugestion...

Otherwise, nice work! I look forward to playing it when you release it.

p.s. Saint Mother Church? What is the english version of the name? "Saint Mother Church" sounds a bit... awkward.

It is St Mother's Church, but it also happens to be the first French town to have been liberated in 1944, it's not a name Driven made up...

Oooh! Okay... That's cool to actually quote history. Not many maps do that these days (aside from a couple beach maps).

Though... is that the actual name of the church? If it's Saint Mother's Church... wouldn't it then be:

dod_eglise-de-st-mere ?
or
dod_eglise-st-mere ?

I really don't agree with that statement. I can only see one screenshot, and it's very dark and doesn't show much.

Hey, I'm not saying it's a bad map, I just can't judge from that one dark pic alone.

Definitely change the name.

if it has a plane and paratroopers on d-day then I think its a good map.

82nd Airborne. 101st wasn't supposed to be anywhere near Eglise. Well, the jump into the town was disasterous, almost completely casualties(as well as a guy who's parachute got caught on the church. He played dead so well that men who survived remember thinking he bought it). When the guys who were supposed to attack the town got into it, it was cleared. I remember one MGer nearly pissed his pants, turning around and seeing a dead para dangling from a tree.

2ltben: isnt that a scene in the movie "the longest day"?

ya it happens in the longest day because the longest day was based true to its facts.

thanks for clearing that up ben, i remember reading something about Carwood Lipton from Band of Brothers in the book and how they came across st. mere-eglise, perhaps i rembered wrong.

Pvt. Stephenson
07-02-2005, 12:00 AM
no you are correct kimball. Lipton landed in St. Mere Eglise. Remember people! Paratroopers missed their drop zone!

travis
07-02-2005, 04:12 AM
a lot of troops were actually misdropped into st.mere eglise and got chopped down b4 they could hit the ground.

2ltben
07-02-2005, 10:01 AM
Those guys that landed in the town only missed their dropzone. They dropped into their objective instead of southwest of it. Lipton and Winters' group dropped close to St. Mere-Eglise, but they never went into the town. They went in the opposite direction.

And Stephenson, The Longest Day really stretched the truth for a 'historic' movie. Oh sweet kittens did that movie change alot. The book, however, is still one of the best accounts of D-Day avaliable.

Pvt. Stephenson
07-02-2005, 01:36 PM
I read the book, D-Day with the Screaming Eagles. Lipton landed in the backyard of some house in St. Mere Eglise.

2ltben
07-02-2005, 01:40 PM
It was probably the far outskirts then. St. Mere-Eglise was a pretty small town, iirc. It, like more West Norman towns and villages, was surrounded by hedgerowed farmland.

Pvt. Stephenson
07-02-2005, 01:47 PM
It could be he landed in the outskirts of St. Mere. Eglise. You should read D-Day With the Screamin Eagles though. Now back on topic.
Will the paratroopers always teleport in different locations. I would hate to keep spawning in the same location cause someone who nows where people spawn in the map can kill everyone.

2ltben
07-02-2005, 01:52 PM
I tried something like that on a test map. The fuselage was hidden from the rest of the map, and there were smoke entities to represent clouds that concealed the bottom. The player jumped on a grid of teleporters, and the teleporters would lead to different places, with no real way to determine which you'd land on. However, I couldn't figure out how to effeciently manage the descent without lowering the gravity of the entire map.

I've played nomads dirtydozen map and the paratrooper drop is always fun.

yeah! that church looks great. Great architecture.

i love mapping churches, allows me to be creative and try some different architectural tecniques and styles. I've got a stack of unfinished / unreleased maps of just churches, with different styles and architecture, even one that was on a hillside. I find 'em the more interesting and challenging and rewarding type of 'building' to create, i get right into them.

One thing i'd suggest is add a roof overhang along the sides, it just adds a little bit of extra depth to the roof and if you line up the overhang with the support pillars you've got along the side of the church, it makes for a really good architectural effect. Take a quick run around the church in diversion at the axis spawn to see what i mean. Sorry to boast, but im personally quite proud of my church in diversion, and i just like mapping churches.

which is a good thing. adds a lot to the atmosphere. mapping looks good also but it does look like it has a lot of atmosphere, reminds of 3.1 in that way.
considering source will be here in a few months though, are you thinking of porting it over once it's released?

for picture three, with the flame, add a orange light (glow) to give the fire a more realistic feel.

Thanks for your comments neutrino ;) !

Its the door of this house, then they must to be beautiful :) but i can't put a old texture for this door...
