can you do this?

can you clip brushes through other brushes instead of having to be precise? or will i get some wierd error?
Yeah,
you can do it: it's called 'carve'
YOU SHOULDN'T BE USING THIS!!! Most of the times, carve will create unwanted brushes that have weird faces and stuff.
Nine out of ten times, you'll get some weird error if you do something complicated with carve. And you will end up starting all over again or you are busy to correct what you done.
The vertex manipulation tool is faaaaaaaaaar superior. It gives more control to get brushes and stuff.
I as a newb, I have been using carve in the beginning a lot. I got all weird errors and it took hours to correct them since I didn't know how the engine handles stuff made in hammer.

lol :D that's some pretty cool stuff you got their, anyway, i never used the carve tool and even now I have no clue what it's supposed to do :D
A better example of the evils of carving:

(click + drag to address bar)
I suggest only carving with blocks on other simple pieces, it usually messes up, just know that if you want a door way, use the clip tool and clip a wall to look like the file attached, I suggest the first way if you are going to put multiple doors on the wall so that the top brush can go the length of the wall, the second can be used if there are windows or something above.

i think his question was can you jam a clipbrush into
a solid without causing an error,
and the answer is yes, you can
no errors, no carving required
Maybe it was...either way I think bic-ball's non-carved hole has more poly's than the carved one. Carving can be good sometimes, but only in the hands of a professional...don't try this at home.
Oh and btw if you "jam" a clip brush into a wall it will cut the wall. In fact it will cut the wall in an unpredictable manner similar to the carve tool, and may cause errors, or atleast horrible r_speeds. So don't do it if it isn't absolutely necessary.

Umm, no, carving a hole never works good, look at the lines on that one, they are 2x thick at some places because the points don't exactly meet, making holes which could leak, if you look at it in the 3d view more closely you can see through it at some parts. If you don't like the way i did it the "right" way in that pic, you could do it like this:
never overlap brushes, its as simple as that kids (cept for the very tiny exceptin of origin brushes). you want something to be like a rod through sommin, great. but make the left side and right side seperate brushes. applys to everything and if you argue I'll be able to disprove you (but please try prove me wrong I dont know EVERYTHING)
Carve is evil we all agree, dont use it. if you must use it for a guide but its a VERY VERY crappy one to try use.

clip brushes do not break up world brushes, try it and see.
they dont add to r_speeds or anything else either,
so you can do whatever u want with them
