It is being moved to a pub area. The testers say it has a CS feel. you start in a tunnel and have an area flag in the building

this is NOT a dod map at all.

check out maps like caen, merderet, kraftstoff or even public maps!!
Those all have an unique forties atmosphere or a reference to that era.

The object of most map is to have a "realistic" feel or to reference to the reality.

Just ask yourself: does this look to i.e. the towns and buildings you see in Saving Private Ryan if you seen that movie? I can already say: far from it.

Now here's my critics. Don't take it as an insult. I just want to help you and these are my honest opinions!!

1. use the WAD's that came with the new v1.0 dod instead of the basic hl.wad. It's now almost 5 years old. It's been overused. Textures from that wad in a map are already a reason to say your map is 'crap' to express myself harshly
2. the architecture. Does this look like 1944 somewhere in Europe, Africa or whatever? I don't think so. You don't give us much info about it's setting or objectives but going from the name I think you wanted to rercreate a quarry. Does that look like a quarry in 1944? I highly doubt it. Going from your shot: you put a nice paved road with sidewalks in the middle of the quarry. I'd expect a dusty rubble road. The houses are blocks with roofs. The thing on the left: a tower of some sort? i don't see really resemblance with something in real life. The walls of your quarry are going right up to the sky: they don't look rocky or eroded or whatever: they look like they are: straight cube brushes with the rock texture from the HL_wad on them.
3. the lighting: FOR GODS SAKE!!! CHANGE THE SKY!!! The desert sky is the standard sky that all maps are compiled in!! Same like the critic on the wad: it's over 5 years old and overused. CHANGE IT!!!! check /gfx/env folder in your dod-folder!!! It contains LOTS of nice skies used in dod-maps!!!
4. props: there are no sandbags, apart from the prefab truck you used, no nice models like telephone poles, etc. use them!! there is enough nice stuff in your dod-folder.

Well, that sums it up a bit for me.

You wanted to recreate a quarry as a setting. imho a nice and original setting which I greatly encourage!!! You should have sit down and thought about it before going straight into mapping: how does a quarry in the 40's look?? Check out google or books for pics of them so you get a general idea. Next, try to visualise how you want your map to look. Try some different styles and don't be happy because you created a brush. Be happy when you created a brush that looks right and is placed right and isn't redundant or anything. Finally: build it and use EVERY means possible to bring your map to live i.e. with props like models, sprites, particles, whatever.

Now, I'm assuming your a first time mapper. I think it's great you got something finished and you want to get it released. You shouldn't be discouraged from harsh critics: just practice, practice, practice again. Learning how to use Hammer isn't easy and you can't learn it from tutorials: you have to use it day after day and understand what it can and can't do.

Finally: whenever you are busy mapping, release some shots from time to time (NOT after every compile i mind you!) to get some feedback from us. We don't bite, we just want to help you to get a great map and give you advice or whatever!!!

Now I suggest you should go back to the drawingtable, think about what went wrong, surf the net and this forum, and try again!! but NEVER give up because ppl don't like your work.

You will get there some day!!

yeah inch's totally right

just play some dod maps and make some screenshots to inspire yourself , but don't steal .......

and espially dont map and create the map within hours.. ake ur time and playtest till u goin crazy ....

try some ruined houses with rubble etc. and don't mix up texture styles like avalanche and jagd for example

good luck

Aww come on yall. Give him a chance. Texturing is like 1/10th of map making. They can be easily replaced with the click of a button. Let's see the brushwork first, shall we?

05-17-2003, 07:32 AM
no I don't think so !

textures are the athmosphere in a map .

or wat would u think if charlie for example had this ou_sand texture from half-life

ok it's his first map and everyone is a noob first, we're just givin him some advice thats all

Urm....on a sidenote

don't use HL filler textures.

Use HL2 style filler textures (yea, the yellowish ones). Test out gameplay with it.

Though i can't imagine most dod mappers doing that for hl2...LOL...texturing and mapping always go hand in hand and this is deeply ingrained with every mapper. Hard to change habits ! I dun think xerent or any mapper for that matter would be comfortable with constructing a "yellow" map first.

Then again, constructing a yellow map first would mean the mapper can concentrate more on gameplay and brushwork, and then you can have another guy being a full-time texture artist. Of cos, this means you must be more of a brushwork freak instead of a map freak.

I strongly disagree with comments like these. I for one would like to see some maps with different themes/styles in DoD, whether they're set in the 40s or some other time period.

Just my opinion. I realise a lot of people who play DoD like it for its realistic setting though. Personally my take on it is that DoD is fun despite being a realistic war simulator, rather than because of it.

p.s is there a download link for this map? I don't see any in the posts here.

@Fribbles

well, you know what they say

You can't fight over tastes ;)

I'm more for a 'realistic' setting. If you like something different (DoD on a spaceship??) I won't stop you from making such a map and distributing it, if it's well made.

Never use someone else' ideas for inspiration unless you are doing a remake

For a historical game you want to use historic locations for inspiration

I still remember Xerent's Dod Star Trek map :D

Craftos

I agree that it doesn't look like DoD. It's look is very far from any WW2 theme. Simply because of using well-known HalfLife textures I can't get rid of HL feeling. Bad :(.

You are right, that was a bit harse on my site.
Sum suggestions:

Make or use custom textures, make the fenches?..in the tower more realistic. And make the surroundings look more natural.
U could also fill the road up wif sum debry, but dont use crates.

Thank you all.....I don't care if you flame me from here to heck. I enjoy the reading and have moved on to different types of maps. Goon (legoseries and more) has been helping me. since then I have been spending allot of time with haircuts's tutorials and working my buttox off. compile after compile after a minor fix then a major one....

I have a new map called dod_conquered5 that I am finished with (although after fixing many things I still have about 4 textures that are off, but what map have I not see that doesn't have the same issue on a small level) and now I will be working on a new one called dod_resort. I am taking all my old maps (200+) ripping good things and using them as starting points. Easy isn't an option but it is fun to map and see something work.

I even took cs_wolfenstien and cut off the edges, then took a tfc map and split it in two and put it on both ends....the result.....a fun looking map....

Omg you're living it up now.

My advice:
Don't work with decompiled maps and don't work with maps from other mods and make them dod maps cause it doesn't help and they don't work.
If you've seriously been working on this counquered5 map, then show a preview, ask for advice, suggestions. Continue to use your own creativity and not other maps.

I must have missed this during the first round, or I simply ignored due to all the flaming but I think you are progressing well in your mapping. You have learned alot and the last project looks good I think. I couldnt see much from you design so I cant comment on that....

I do strongly believe you can map whatever you want, even if people say they want to play it or not. If they dont like it, no one is forcing them to play your maps ...

I think those flaming you should be ashamed, I didnt see many of them flaming Kami or Xerent when they ported CS maps ...

thank you Kehldon, most are just for my pleasure and my clan's pleasure. At least it isn't a building on both sides with mortar zone in the middle....

I am proud of what I do and what I am learning.
