So I made a layout...

Hi,

I couldn't really sleep last night, so I thought of a project I wanted to start for some time. I decided to crawl out of my bed. I grabbed a piece of paper and a pencil and started drawing a layout. Before you look at the layout, please take a good look at the legenda first.

This layout represents a small Italian hill-town. It should offer fast paced, close-combat action. I also wanted to add a lot of height difference and the allied forces are bound to conquer the small town up-hill. I also wanted to make a part of the village damaged, or bombed out, so to speak.

The reason I posted this layout is to receive feedback on the map's layout and to receive feedback on the way I drawed the layout. There might be some more efficient ways wich I am not aware of right now.
This might also be a inspiration to other mappers, to make layouts. It has worked for me anyway!

So, comments? :)

Looks like a good layout, maybe too big for a HL1-DoD map and more suited for a DoD: Source map?

looks sik, but plans dont have to be uber detailed, just aslong as YOU personally can map from it.

@Maxey
Nope, this one will be for the regular DoD.

It's just that I like making layouts. It's also handy to decide wich building wil be accesable from wich point and were the windows will look out thru. It gives me a guideline of the tactical purposes of buildings. :)

you'll never get away with angling buildings like you have in your drawing on HL1. Brush splits everywhere.

why not move to source. Im personally completely nausiated by the limits of HL1.

Nah...he can get away w/angling the buildings...it's actually better visually to do so as long as you have sightlines closed up area-by-area. Kinda reminds me of dod_advance

But agree...better to Sourcify the maps...get it started in CS:Source and port it over when the time comes.

You say that you're going to make part of the town blown-out, so I'd make the Allied spawn part of town the destroyed side. The Axis control the town, so they'd be headquartered in the good buildings.

And since you're going with a hillside theme, you might consider some elements of the CS map cs_drugwar. It was built on a cliffside, and it had a cool sewer system that ran from cliff to cliff. Maybe make a wall around one side of the town, with the cliff below it and a ditch/sewer running the outside of the wall. That would make sense in a 500-year old European town built on a cliffside, as walls were common to keep out invaders during the middle ages. Tactically, if it has multiple exit points, it will add some good flanking options for both teams.

The sketch is quite nice, should be a good layout, if you can stick to it

I wish I could sketch like that.

I like how you drew the building faces and whatnot. Really gives a feel to what the town would look like.

very nice sketch indeed.

judging on the layout, i would say you'd run into some serious rspeed problems in HL1...which isn't that big of a deal because it sounds like you'll probably do this in source? or am i confused?

anyway, having a detailed plan like this always helps the mapping process go faster. in fact, you may want to try redrawing on quadrule paper so you get the sizing and distances down better. yeah, i know you started the layout already, but it never hurts to hone your concept before starting it in Hammer.

From your detailed sketch it looks like a fun map, it kinda reminds me of a CoD:of map.

Letīs hope that you canīt really sleep at night more often - unless your ideas are better if your fully out-slept :D
Your drawing skills are really amazing!
