[WIP] Spitfire

there was a program on the spitfire on last friday and this friday, so along with it being my favourite vehicle from WW2, i decided to model one after seeing that. i don't have any planned maps that could use it, but maybe i'll think of something, and other people could still use it anyway.

it took me about a day to model and skin it. the skin isn't finished yet, i need to make it more worn, add more scratches and chip the body paintwork a bit. i think the skin turned out ok though, the best i've ever done so far. it's already compiled and ingame (HL2DM), and it's about 1600 verts i think, including an interior

Is this for source?

if it is, it could use some more polies.

there is nothing wrong with stuff being low poly and looking good :P few more, but not too many more. A better skin would do the model justice aswell

Not bad but as mentioned, it could do with a few more polys. The proportions are rather off too - the wings are too thick, theirs no dihedral to the wings for a start.

i like it, id just make the skin lil bit more "worn", but thats just me

More polies couldnt kill but if you want lots of planes on a big open area, perhaps not. Most people probably wont be doing lod meshes except the l33t with ub3r amounts of time to do so. But it will dramatically improve ppl's ingame performance. Hint hint.

Add lots of rivets, paint chips and dings, scratches, some
color burning, some shading, dirt and grime, worn areas on the landing gear, highlights on the tires and treads, etc etc.

Its looking very flat as of now but I commend you on your skills.

i've never skinned vehicles before, i've done a couple of weapons and map textures, so skinning it wasn't easy. i have drawn the rivets, but they don't show up that well, i'll probably add them again though and make them clearer. i've got thick blurred lines over all the panel edges which makes it look a lot better, and just random scratches all over the place. the ingame lighting adds a lot to the texture, which means i don't have to add highlights and shadows like you'd usually have to other games.

as for the modelling, there are some things i need to fix. the wing needs some work and the back of the wing should be lower down. i didn't think it needed any more polys though. the lighting in game makes it look smoother, as do the smooting groups.

here's the texture so far btw. there's another one which includes the canons, landing gears, wheels etc, aswell as the right wing, so the plane doesn't end up symmetrically textured.

We're all entitled to an opinion but low doesnt have to be bad it depends on how the whole thing comes together.

But hey, this is a work in progress so lets just see what the final outcome is.

looks great, but i think the cockpit is a little thiner and longer.....

Also the wings look to thick....

To me, the skin just looks too "pure". The colors are way too solid, and it looks even more so in-game. The model looks nice, though. Good job.

This looks awsome. I really can't wait until this is finished and put into maps.
