Anyone have this combo?
Do you get the " a required resource was " error after 2 min?
anyone know if u can/will be able to run hammer w/out steam running in the background?
the problem:
- all unecessary programs off, boot steam, boot sdk menu, boot hammer, close all windows except hammer
-start mapping/ open a file
-try to copy/paste a brush, 3 of the 4 views stop responding
-a few seconds later i get the error box pop-up saying "a required resource was ", and its blank
-am able to save my map, shut off hammer, then i get the error box saying "HAMMER: this program has performed an illegal operation .... yada yada"
i've tried googling this error with few results, it seems it may be win98-related but i think it could be a video card issue or something else as well
any input appreciated

People still use Windows 98?
Get with the times man, install Windows XP, it's a gazillion times better than Win98.

Wow maxey, that was helpful! What an excellent solution to his problem. You must be extremely proud of yourself.
Ya wanna know whats funny? Greenhorn and I were laughing about the inevitable 'useless' replies to this one before he posted it. Looks like your the winner.
Has anyone had this problem that does not have win98?
You really need to be objective about the OS. Seems the prog is looking for something that may be missing. Perhaps a directory issue...??
I checked the verc-collective with no luck. Ill let you know GH if I find someone who knows whats up. I dont use win98, but If I get this problem I want to know how to fix it if need be.

in all honesty i think the problem is infact your OS, not many companies make software that is 98 compatable anymore.

Windows 98 is terrible at handling resources. I can't tell from here though if it's a problem with the program, your setup, or the OS. I could install Windows 98 on one of my test-benches at home and see if I get similar errors if you'd like.

thx guys, but was just wondering if this was a problem specific to win98, or if it was a memory/video card problem
no-one else gets this error?

i think the better question is "anyone else use 98" to which i would expect the answer to be no. Using a 7 year old OS for modern software is deffinately going to cause problems. Can you even play dod on 98???? i know i used to back then but i mean now it would be pretty bad i would think

actually I was using Win98 for mapping in Hammer for DoD in the early days...didn't really have much of a problem. But since XP came out I haven't touched 98. I have no idea how HL1 Hammer 3.5 or Source Hammer will perform in 98, and I'm not about to load it up to test.
So yeah, hopefully someone else will respond and give some better insight. I must agree with the idea of upgrading to XP. Sorry I couldn't be more help. Best of luck.

i'm resisting an OS update, just call me oldschool
system resources at 94% free,
with steam and hammer running,
(no map loaded yet) its down to 63%
create a new map and add about 16 brushes,
(about 2 min later) its down to 30%,
add a few more brushes and a texture,
down to 18%,
a crash is imminent here, it seems hammer is just absolutely bleeding my system resources the longer its open
anybody know exactly what hammer is doing/needs?
i have all the hammer settings to their bare minimums,
(min draw distance, draw opaque, min vis distance, only 5 redos, only default textures,1 window open at a time, all steam menus closed, NOTHING else running except steam (grr, why is this necessary)
if anyone with more knowhow than me wants to walk me thru a mild overclock, that would be nice :)
here's my jalopy specs:
AMD Sempron 2400+
core speed 1680mhz
fsb speed 168mhz
bus speed 336mhz
voltage 1.616
ASRock mobo model k7s41gx
512mb ddr-sdram
radeon9200se pci
BIOS american megatrends p1.90
btw HL2 runs fine for me, except for slow map-load times, and i havent had any other win98 conflicts
hammer 3.5 runs fine too, even with HUGE maps

just out of curiousity why would you resist an OS update? winXP is by far the best operating system ever (for personal use such as gaming) explain your reasoning plz! im interested

seems to me all the viruses/trojans always attack the newer OS's
there's far more advanced built-in spyware (official MS bigbrother stuff that u cant even see) in newer OS's
okay so i'm paranoid,
:P

i know the call of duty editor (modified radiant) had a problem with running on older versions of windows, i think ME and 95 or 98, which a lot of people were unhappy about. maybe the new hammer was designed mainly for the newer OSes and isn't supposed to be run on the older ones.

greenhorn just update mate :P the most common OS is winXP and the reason most viruses are made to affect XP is because it is the most used OS. update and get it over with :P
winXP with firefox and a good firewall/anti virus program means your pretty safe

Why do you have such a good computer running win98? Do you have it set up as dual-boot?
Given, 98 is the most stable version of windows ever (ME is horrible... it's just 98 with added features. Seriously. And added features = more unstable) but still... why 98?
WinXP isn't the best one out there, if it was, then there would be no linux users.... or mac users, for that matter.
But anyway, imo, Win98 wasn't even designed to handle those kinds of resources. I mean, the specs you have... were only dreams and not nearly a reality. So the os was designed for (what we consider) really really low-end computers.
It's just so much on such a basic OS, something is bound to crash.
P.S. altho... hl2 runs fine and hammer still runs ok even with big maps? i dunno....

i suppose then since your making a fuss about it, OS is down to a personal preference and its just a huge coincidence that winXP is the most widely used operation system in the world? and yes i know that doesnt mean its the best,

Do NOT TOUCH my Windows 98, or I'll murder your hamster with dark rituals!

Windows 98 forever, I love em. But good option is installing dualboot system on your computer (Win98 + WinXP or Win2k).
Yeah I know. This doesnt solve your trouble.

ME is the worst. 98 is NOT the most stable Windows, it's horrible. XP is based off the NT core, which is loads more stable than the Win9x family brand of kernel. XP/Server 2003 are extremely stable, and very easy to maintain, the problems are with the people and programs that go into the OS almost always. It's not very hard to maintain a completely clean XP system. Firefox +adblock, basic free AV (Avast!, AVG etc.) and *gasp* an update once in a while and you're good to go. Linux is not the godsend for a lot of reasons, it's nice, but not a good replacement for most desktop purposes.

ok ok ok... it's not the most stable (i realized that right after i posted it, but didn't bother to change it)
and you're right, xp is alot more stable, but i would have to say that it defiantely has its share of problems.
server2003 hasnt' crashed on me once in like.... 4 months.

like to note that since I switched to FireFox at home, my weekly spybot sweep rarely picks up anything on my system.
I run WinXP SP1...SP2 just blew.
travis

I hate sp2 so i dont use it *pats sp1*
Id agree with firefox and i think some simple guidelines to keeping a good clan pc is to use
Firefox
Spyware scanner
Virus scanner
A good firewall is never a bad idea either
Using a pc and keeping it clean is really up to you, just be careful what you do. For example my old mans pc is riddled with spyware and viruses becaz he likes to go round looking at porn and clicking all those "CLICK HERE FOR FREE ACCESS" popups etc... i gave up on cleaning his computer.
and to whoever said xp isnt without its share of problems, your absolutely right but then again show me an OS that doesnt have problems - id like to use it.
