dod_cherbourg

i was trying to come up with an idea for a map yesterday for dod:s, and after a failed gold beach idea, i got an idea for a map after playing red orchestra, and as i was stuck for a layout, i thought i'd base it off dod_cherbourg. but then, having no ideas of what to do with it, i though i'd just recreate dod_cherbourg for source, but obviously with a lot more detail.

i've email Arcturus asking him for persmission, but i don't know if his emails work, the only ones i could find were from the dod_cherbourg and dod_oslo readme files, which were from about 3 years ago, so i don't know if they'll work. so i'm just asking here incase i don't get a reply. would there be a problem with remaking it for dod source? dod:s isnt actually the same game as dod <1.0, or even dod >1.0, and people have recreated official HL1 maps for HL2, which made me think there might not be a problem. as the author hasn't been around for years, as far as i know, i doubt he'd be making it for source either, so there wouldn't be a problem with that.

i just wanted to check anyway, i'd really like to see this map on source, it's always been my favourite dod map with the best gameplay of any dod map i've played before, and also looked great even back then, let alone on source. and i think it'd be a shame if this map was just lost, the only way to get it on source would be the author converting it or someone else remaking it from scratch.

and also, it'd help me if anyone else had Arcturus' email address, incase the 2 i tried don't work.

I'm sure people will kick up a fuss over using the same name. Just call it something else and if the community thinks its good enough, then ask.

Edit: He also has an account here, PM and Email through that.

his last post (of only 26) was last october. i can't email him through here but i've sent a PM anyway, incase the email doesn't reach him.

so would it actually be ok to remake the map under a different name? i want to get started on this map soon so i can get it finished earlier and also to give me something to do.

or something related to the city.

I'm new to the mapping community so I'm just trying to figure out what I would want if I was in his situation. If you fail to contact him I would change the name slightly. even just cherbourg2. then just make sure you credit him. with the name change he can always do the map himself and keep his name if he comes back to mapping.

well if your bored and dont know what to map, but want to map, then find someone and work on a project. im sure everyone has 'okay' stuff sittin around that another person could work with easily.

I agree. I was very excited when I found a working copy of Cherbourg and Oslo to put on my 1.3 server. I would hate to see them disappear forever when Source comes out.

The way I always understood it is that people could make new versions of a map (for example, cs_city_assault) as long as they gave the original mapper credit (thanks for making cs_assault).

So hopefully you're able to make a Source version of Cherbourg, even if you have to call it dod_cherbourg_2005 or dod_cb1 or whatever.

As a side note, I hope that Overlord, Heutau, Koln, Zafod, Schwetz, Dog1, and many others find there way to Source.

cherbourg was the major seaport, IIRC. you could call it dod_port or something along those line

btw, if you do redo it for source, i will purchase a mail order bride for you :-D

i started the map about a week ago, i haven't done that much on it, most of the time has been spent trying to think of what to add. cherbourg, like most other 3.1 maps, was totally out of proportion, with the big buildings by each teams' first flag just being 2 big empty rooms with steps going up to the 2nd floor. i've had to try to figure out how to make everything connect and fit, and to look realistic.

but this is what i have got so far. i've only used 3 or 4 exterior wall textures and about 4 of my own custom ones indoors. the buildings are all plain and there isn't much detail yet, but i'm just getting the main parts built, ready for when dod:s is released and i can use the models and textures from the game.

overview:

that's basically all i've done so far. i'll get the rest of the main buildings made by the end of the week, then i just need to wait for dod:s and i can add window frames, retexture, make the 3d skybox etc. and i'll probably release it as dod_cherbourg2 or something, so people at least know it is cherbourg and not a completely different map. and of course i'd credit Arctarus in the readme, i know i wouldn't be pleased if someone else claimed my stuff as their own (which has happened before).

Good work so far!

Do you intend to make some alterations to the orignal layout and/or add some things of your own?

I like things being "out of proportion", maps now adays are to tight and confining. It's nice to have a little breathing room.

I think you should rework the courtyard though. The best part of the map was using the red room above the over pass to get everywhere. You could use it to look at the allies and axis first flags. You could jump out the window and go to the hotel. But the best feature, was that you could (as allies or axis) jump from the balcony in the courtyard over to the ladders and sneak in behind enemy lines.

Give it more height.

On the X and Y scale at least, the layout is the same size as the original. I decompiled the bsp and copied the roads into the source SDK, so everything would be the right distance apart. I've rebuilt everything from scratch over those though, and replaced a lot of the buildings with my own ideas, but still kept all the windows, routes etc in the same place to keep the gameplay the same. Like the allies building by the 1st flag, which instead of being 2 huge empty rooms, is now 2 floors with corridors and stairs leading upstairs, but the huge hole in the front is still there. So I have added some of my own things, but most of the stuff's the same, just made more realistic.
That also means all the routes are still there, so all those paths from the courtyard haven't changed much. But because of the difference in size, somethings aren't exactly the same. You'd still know where everything is from playing the original though. Also on the courtyard, the main problem with it right now is that it's just too plain. I'll add door and window models to the walls once the game is released but until then it'll just be plain walls, and an extremely useful and fun area to use SLAMs in.

Hi,
Sorry my old @dayofdefeatmod.com hasn't been working for years. I never got your email. I just saw this thread so this is the first i've heard about it.

Feel free to make a Cherbourg remake. Valve actually purchased it off me a couple years ago. It's technically their property now. Since it's theirs, I believe you are allowed to do whatever you want (except sell it heh).

I appreciate you attempting to ask me though.

I really encourage you to continue with this remake. Perhaps with the source engine, you can make the map how I originally envisioned it before the requirements of the HL1 engine damped my progress.

Best of luck.
If you need any help, please PM/email me. I'll be more than happy to help.
