Hi guys,
I finaly managed to make a map wich is release-worthy (IMHO).
May I present you dod_nordwind:
DOD_NORDWIND by Zuriël 'killer tomato' Atia (zuriel.atia@gmail.com)
The Battle of the Bulge began with the German attack (Operation Wacht am Rhein and
the Herbstnebel plan) on the morning of December 16, 1944. Two later attacks on
New Year's Day 1945 attempted to create second fronts in Holland (Operation Schneeman)
and in northern France (Operation Nordwind).
It's now december the 25th,
CHRISTMASS EVE, SAINT VITH
The Allied troops hoped to win the war before Christmass.
Unfortunatly, the Allied forces are still battling for keypositions in France.
All soldiers of the 82nd Airborne Division are promissed to celebrate christmass at
their own homes...

After days of bombing the weakened German troops are nervously awaiting a raid from
the 82nd Airborne Division. Their only hope is to hold strong against the Americans
and to make sure nothing happens to the King Tiger untill they get orders to leave
St. Vith and to meet up with the Fifth Panzer Army.
OBJECTIVES
ALLIES
- Destroy the King Tiger and eliminate every resistance found.
AXIS
- Hold St. Vith untill orders are given to meet up with the Fifth Panzer Army (10 minutes);
- make sure nothing happens to the tank, it's your ticket out of that hellhole.
It's a small map and it has a plain layout. You can play it with 12 vs 12 max and... Ah, who am I kidding. Take a look at the screenshots and download the file!

though it is not perfect i can see that you enhance your mapping skills with every map you do :) it has a nice atmosphere i think - map on!:hamster:

Hi,
I'm back again with a new update!
These are the things I changed:
- Added more rubble;
- Added fires;
- Added more clipbrushes to secure the map better;
- Fooled around with the lightning;
- Adjusted some architecture;
- Adjusted the rendering of the water in the sewer;
- Removed sewer rats;
- Adjusted the mortarfields.

ran around on it, nice job.
good brushwork, good texture usage, i like the objective idea, found a few things you should tweak imo:
- 1 bazooka shot is too easy for the allies, i would bump up the damage so it takes 4 or 5 shots to take out the tank, or use tnt instead
also i noticed that some models are lit up with a blue-ish light that really stands out too much, maybe dim the ambient lighting a bit
and your main objective is rendering both damaged and undamaged models, you have to use a couple env_renders to get the models to appear and disappear (if you're not already)
overall i like it, looks like a fun map

I would use different textures for the rubble (i.e. one with smaller grains or rocks/rubble) as the one you're using is both really overused, gawdy and doesn't make much sense. I'd also make a more defined "trim" on the houses and church where you've got protruding parts, so instead of just a little bit of ledge sticking out with the same texture make it with a horizontal bar of either a wood texture or a stone trim texture.

also, instead of a simple trigger_hurt that insta-gibs you when u enter enemy spawn, how about a trigger_teleport that just knocks you back ten feet (put the info_teleport_destination up in the air a bit so u take a little damage when u fall)

I've removed to trigger hurt, Allies are now free to enter the building [the func_message didn't work for some reason so the instagib came as a surprise to me to :)].
I also made the tank harder to destroy [4 bazooka shots], I dimmed the ambient light a bit so the models don't have the blue-ish teint and I'm working on the tankrendering [compiling now, so I'm not sure yet if it works, since I've not found any tut on it :o]

A few (tiny) things:
On pic 8 of the new pictures (much better large size) the house has an imho out of place roof texture. A darker one would fit better imho.
Also I see a number of ruined walls with windows. The cracks interesect the windows. I feel this looks unprofessional. You should either model around them or use a different texture.
Perhaps I'm picking nits but it's better than no feedback imho...

func_message doesn't work anymore...
use a trigger_multiple that targets an env_message point based entity and it'll work. I had trouble with this in the past as for some reason they still include the old non-working entities but tend to not document it. (Probably my only gripe with the DoD team.)

Hi,
I'm planning of maybe making this map a capture the flag map. That would probably improve the gameplay imho.
This is what I am planning to change:
- replace rooftexture on pic 8 of the new textures;
- using a trigger_teleport for axis spawnprotection;
- making the map CTF;
- making the map less laggy by changing the func_mortarfield;
- making changes to brushwork.

I would make a lot of the walls a bit thinner, they're much too "chunky" and a few of the buildings are quite off-scale. Try using a thickness of 32-16 for the walls. As well, lower the sidewalk to 8 units high and give it a better sidewalk texture (rather than a wall brick texture)

Okay,
I'm sorry to say but because I got banned from the STEAM network :o I can't playtest my map, neither can I compile yet.
So the developement of my map will have a slight delay.
Just to inform you guys about my progresion, these are the changes I've made thusfar:
- I changed the objectives to CTF;
- removed the mortarfield entirely;
- removed about half of the paratroopers;
- added and fixed some brushwork;
- changed some sprites for nicer visuals.
I may have done more but this is as far as I can remember right now. Since I have been up for a pretty long time and for the fact that I am amzingly lazy, I will not try to search hammer for what I may have changed but rather type this whole alinea :kitty:
Next time I will hopefully have a new beta for you people or at least some screens.

Hey,
I'm back in bussiness since yesterday when I bought a new copy of HL :rolleyes: Fortunatly I can say it ain't waisted money :)
Well, of course I started working on nordwind again and I made quite a few changes if I may say so.
Here are the things I've changed:
- I changed the objectives into CTF;
- removed mortarfield entirely;
- removed about half of all paratroopers;
- fiddled a bit with the sprites and lights again, also fixed some brushwork;
- made the tower of the church somewhat destroyed but still passable;
- added some more rubble and changed alot of rubbletextures;
- added some doors;
- removed a background noise;
- added spawnprotection for both teams in the shape of a teleport + a working message;
- changed some rooftextures;
- made intersections for windows in various broken walls to add detail;
- trimmed a few walls for more detail;
- added a door from axisspawn into the axisbuilding.
In my opinion the map has ondergone some very good changes and has changed quite alot. It now awaits it's final compile for the 3rd beta wich hopefully be ready this week.

Only thing I can think of right now is to mabye kill the rain and maybe just use a thunder ambience. Its cool and all but kills a percentage of fps that most ppl would prefer to have.

Serious, I allready made changes to the map and saved it as dod_nordwind_b3LE.rmf. I removed the rain, some sprites and some models :)
The only thing I need to do is compile it but that takes time wich I do not have now, really.

Do you think that Allies was meant to have access to roof via first building on right as you approach middle. You can go to third floor and access ledge and roofs. opinions?
