I've been working on this Springfield recolor, I am going to be referring to diagrams given to me by Splinter and by Brutal to get the lighting correct, I will also probably darken the skin...
The scope and metal was done by HappyFunBall, I just tinted it and darkened it slighty

I can't really tell if it's the stretching of the mesh or it's just the wood grain.. but right now it looks like various lines going straight across the model.
Maybe scaling your wood base down?.. Just looks.. odd
I'm also not sure if you had put in the highlights yet or you just haven't gotten to it yet.. but uhh.. it needs lighting

Seems like that scope is the one bit of skinning I've done right so far. :p

Alright I think this is MUCH better..thanks so much to Splinter and Brutal for very helpful advice
As said before this is the default springfield with HappyFunBalls scope texture but I just added splinters new wool gloves and his sleeves...
There were some bad meshes on this, the very end piece (just before the barrel) and the piece under the scope were a bit stretched, I was able to make the end piece look good (IMO) but I couldn't get any distinct changes underneath the scope

For my axis model I'm using some trenchcoat guys so those look pretty nice with the gloves

Looks better, I suggest going over the lighting (err the parts most affected by the light source) with the dodge-highlights brush more than shadow or midtones

Looks good Stuka. Keep at it. Skinning is hard, I know. But your work is looking better and better the more you practice.

looking better, make sure with the darkened areas toward the edges, make them touch the edge.

That was another mesh problem :\ not sure how to fix it, because no matter how close it likes to stretch em out...but its not noticble when you have the gun because of the view

New Screen Shot with changes the wood to metal showing gone and the scope has been scratched and the metal above the lense changed to silver instead of gold

Only crit I have is that wood grain looks horrendously over contrasted and way out of scale, but thats just me.
If you like it, you go for it! http://www.dayofdefeat.net/forums/images/icons/icon14.gif

Well, with both of those I'd have to compeltely redo the entire wood, maybe a Version 2..lol
Also I've found several mesh problems (which I don't know how to fix) on this defaults spring
Thanks for the crits though, everyone

Could use a bit more shadowing..

Where to put the shadows?

The grain makes it look like the soldier whittled the gun stock out himself. :p

On the wood, under the metal
Change the sleeve mesh...
Stuka

On the stock and the wood under the metal is hard..the mesh is all stretched out thats why the grains look the way they do...i can try to do some more shadowing but it will probably stretch out further than the wood underneath the metal
How do you change the mesh for a sleeve? heh
