custom sprites question..

hi!
got a question about custom sprites.. in particular custom sniper scopes.. i was into a wellknown dod custom sprites site and found scope sprites.. i got curious so i went in to see what they looked like, and there was a discussion going on about one of them.. this scope exists both for axis as well as for allies.. the thing about it is that u are able to see the whole screen even after u scope.. the surrounded area which should be black is transparent on this so u can see what happens around the screen when sniping..
there was a messageboard where u could leave messages about the downloads and the first message said this was a cheat.. most of the others said it was not..
but surely it gotta be, if not a actual cheat then at least very close to one.. it gives a clear advantage to a sniper since his vision is no longer constrained..
if i was in a server and someone used this sprite i would probably be very annoyed if i saw it being used.. although, i dont know how it works with customsprites in spectate mode.. if u can see them or if it just looks normal when spectating someone..
anyway..
people, what u think about this? cheat or no cheat? should sprites like that be allowed on a gameserver?

i dont see it as a cheat and you cant see if someone uses them. because this is client side. all you will see is your custom or default scope.
can i have the link to the site ?

Waaaaay back when.. I made a sprite like that, and made it available to everyone at these forums... Needless to say it became a very heated topic, and I received a lot of negative attention for doing so... Many people yelled at me back then that it was a cheat, and many people said it wasn't... Basically, I think it was decided then that if it gives you an advantage (whether detectable or not... Use good moral judgement) over another player then you shouldn't use it... <shrug> I guess people have changed their minds since then...

its not a cheat... its almost like saying that having a custom model is a cheat, which they are not.
mXed. i made a sniper scope like it, it isnt very fancy... but it works for me.

I agree, but with stipulations... Obviously a custom Axis model pack with different camo patterns is acceptable, but an Axis model pack with Neon colors, and spikes over their heads is not acceptable...
When I first released my Cobra Soldier model pack it was greeted by many posts of "Those are cheats!", and they came under heavy scrutiny... Mainly because the uniforms were a darker blue... If you've ever watched the G.I Joe cartoons, or played with the action figures then you know what I'm talking about... Since then it was decided that they were not cheats (much to my releif)... SO it seems that the DoD community's view on what constitutes a cheat, and what doesn't has changed a little over the last couple few years...
Which is a good thing...

guess those discussions will last forever. for some custom content is always a kind of cheating, for others it is a way of raise the quality of their game and some are not even thinking about why they use it ^^
those sniper scopes appeared a long time ago. it's because of the indexalpha mode those sprites are compiled with. black is non-transparent, grey is semi-tranparent and white is tranparent. so you couls even make the whole sprite white with one little dot... so it's totally tranparent and you can see the whole screen. public you can do nothing about it if not forbid the use of custom content on your server <- a bad idea 'cause most people have something custom enabled when playing custom, so noone would play there. for CWs there is nothing more to do than making screenshots of models, hud, scope and so on (xhair is nonsense 'cause you can change it to easy now).
i used such scopes myself since i found the first for beta 3.1. i'm not a sniper and it does not really make things easier, but IMO they look better. although the default scopes are quite nice.
i guess the most people using custom scopes simply do not know that much about sniping in DoD. most comlain about the axis scope to be hard to use, but when you realise that there is no real need for precise aiming and everything is just feeling and shooting in the raw direction every scope works well.
I played Firearms, and we had tons of custom sprites and models. Some WERE considered cheats, like neon bright models/player heads, the spiked models. I dont think there were any sprites considered cheats there were alot of sprites going around, even ones that had a colored dot in the center. Personaly i would rather use a custom sprite than the default ones i dont see how they give you an advantage over other players because it doesnt make you see the other player faster or anything.

The original post was regarding the sprites used on sniper rifles to simulate you looking through the sight... He found a sprite that removed all the black area around the center, and made it possible for you to see the whole screen.. only zoomed...
Some feel it's wrong.. others don't..

This is much different then having custom models, this allows you to see what you normally would not see, custom models simply makes it look different...with this scope if you see someone on your flank and can react when normally you would not have seen him, that is an unfair advantage..
And about people saying Axis scope is hard..heh its no harder than anything else, its all in your head, both scopes its just lineing a part of the scope up with the person, on the axis its just the tip of the bottom line..
