well, i dont know if this applys to others, but ive kinda given up on custom maps cos no one will play them.

now, if i could work for a mod, then ppl would play my maps.

do you mean in general, that nobody will play custom maps?
or are you just applying to your own custom maps?

both, there arnt many custom servers around, and not many ppl play custom maps.

but really its my frustration on clans/groups (not saying any names) who shedual a map test for me and when i go on the server at the shedualled time for the test, they dont know anything about it, the admin isnt there and/or the map isnt loaded onto the server.

just general dis-organisation.

well, if anyone wants to host my custom map on a server it would be nice. down load the map (dirtydozen_b3) HERE (http://nomad.dssghq.net/dod_dirtydozen_b3.exe) and tell me their server ip, so i can play too :)

i was the same nomad but then sherman popped up on kustomkettle and it motivated me to get back into mapping - I always had trouble mapping thinking that no one would play my maps and always had a goal to get 1 map on kk :P that happened and i myself have joined an HL2 mod team, you cant always guarantee the mods will pickup but it contructive work and yes i believe it does pay off a lot more than custom mapping for a mod does, but each to his own, goto mod db and look for one that is recruiting ;)

Hate to break up your "nobody plays custom maps" party, but last time I checked, there were 25 custom map servers for DoD that were nearly full or had at least a dozen people playing. (The best tool for viewing them is the "All Seeing Eye" game browser.)

It used to be much worse, perhaps half that number or less. But once Valve invoked the "auto download" feature for the dedicated server, the number of DoD custom map servers has doubled.

One request for the next version of this map - PLEASE don't put all the model, sprites and sound files in your own folder (i.e. models/dd/ and sprites/dd/ and sound/dd/). It is a pain to create install files and it eats up un-necessary bandwidth on the sv_downloadurl .

All that aside - great map.

And back on topic - Custom maps are the main staple for our server - not everyone in the DOD community plays avalanche 24/7 :carrot:

Hmm yeah but for some strange reason it almost never works for me, (auto d load) it starts to dload and then I get an error that
says your dod_XXXX.bsp differs from the downloaded dod_XXXX.bsp so I get disconected, and I have never dloaded the map before...!? Strange, and that makes me think twice before connecting to a custom map server.... :mad:

Play on the [CS] Server I do all the time, good teamplay (most of the time) and they use only custom maps, what except like northbound every once and again....

well, the .exe is an install file, all you have to do is point it to your dod directory, and it creates all the folders its self.

You should try my installer - it auto-detects your dod folder - (thanks to Trp. Jed for the instructions on setting that up). It takes a little more effort on the setup - but it also is the easiest way to make sure folks get the maps installed correctly - or they can auto-download with sv_downloadurl. Either way - aren't a lot of those files in the dd folders standard files?

A bit difficult really, sure you can get an idea and what have you. Terrain, buildings and stuff, no models though and only a few textures, a few of the CS and Half-Life ones are quite good though.

In the mean time I'm makeing CS:Sorce maps ... sorry :kitty:

Maybe for other custom mappers.

I have a simple way of making custom maps though. I keep the content of my maps, models/textures/sounds/sprites, default.

You could say I have no custom content in my custom maps :kitty:

To map like this I obviously need DoD : Source to be released.

I was going to start a new thread but I think most replies get read here.

So who's actually left that's making maps for Dod?

I'm still working on my first and I expect a first release soon. I won't start mapping for Dod:S until it's released.

As Dod:S is not expected until late 2005, I may make another map.
