Well, I've been browsing around for HL2 mapping tutorials, and I found some made by Waldo himself on the Steam Forums
You can find them @ Valve's official website forums for steam, and all of Valves software.
Steam Home (news, etc)
http://www.steampowered.com
Source SDK Forum (http://www.steampowered.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?forumid=41)

Tutorials you'll find
Waldo's Source SDK Cookbook (http://www.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=170869)
(includes rain & snow, and more)
Hanging Wires (telephone wires, ropes, etc) (http://www.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=170388)
Ground Morphing (terrain, etc) (http://www.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=170388)
Water (http://www.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=170973)
To you mappers I highly suggest visiting this forum frequently for basic tutorials from Valve and others. These are probably in the Source Documentation (http://www.valve-erc.com/srcsdk/) as well but I posted them to spread the word. Even if you do not have the editor yet, read them anyways, take notes, etc.
